C2 - Sunday, May 2, 1982 - North Shore News Rape prevention seminar announced Rape is an act of violence and humiliation whereby the victim (usually female) experiences overwhelming fear and a profound sense of powerlessness and _ help- lessness which few life events can parallel. Rape is considered one of the fastest growing violent crimes. In B.C., 547 rapes were reported in 1981, an increase of 17.1% over 1980. These statistics become even more frightening in view of the fact that a significant numoer of rapes go unreported. Fear of rape is an everyday reality for women, young and old. Few have the skills to protect themselves from attack. For the majority of women the options available at the time of an attack are extremely limited. To provide the public with a better understanding of the subject, and present specific protection strategies. the justice institute of B.C. is sponsoring a three hour seminar on rape prevention. Slated for Monday, May 3rd, 7:00 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Community Centre, 3161 Ontario Street, the seminar will cover a number of topics including: Profile of a Rapist, Avoidance Techniques, Protection Strategies and the Criminal © Justice System Response. This free seminar is open to both men and women. For further information or to pre-register, contact either the Mount Pleasant Com- munity Centre, 874-8165, or the Justice Institute of B.C.
