Monday night's council meeting swarmed with distraught property owners in the vicinity of the propos- ed tower, all voicing concern about possible view obstruction from _ their homes. Architect Bill Lort at- tempted to reassure them that existing views from homes would not be severely handicapped. “Our complex will only be 96 ft. wide on a 400 foot Ye AS - Wednesday, February -17, 1982 - North Shore News piece of property. It won't be more than a postage stamp obstruction,” he ex- plained. But homeowners refused to buy his arguments. Ralph Carder, a homeowner threatened with obstructed view, = said: “There is a popular misconception which is nur- tured by developers that when faced with such high rise developments the only recourse for residents is to ask for low rise alternatives (and the development goes ahead).” Another resident feared West Vancouver would soon be flooded with a sea of high rises, “What we need are small density and lower, nicer looking buildings,” said David Bruce-Thomas. Alderman Diana Hutchin- son queried Lort on whether he has considered altering the design of the building from 95 ft. wide to 84 ft. wide. “Yes ... we've considered it. But nothing can be gamed from it,” Lort replied. Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys, meanwhile, ques tioned Lort about possible floor space ratio violations if apartment balconies are closed in. He obtained assurance from Lort that such practices would not be effected once the building is occupied. Finally Alderman David Finlay moved to refer the project back to municipal staff for consideration of various amendments to the structure. ; Council expects the staff recommendation report back for final consideration next Monday.
