By TERRY LAVENDER DENNIS FOON’s Hunchback of Notre Dame is as misshapen as the title character Quasimodo himself. And that is unfortunate — for the play, based on Victor Hugo's novel, -Notre Dame of Paris, is generally well- acted and has some very good individual moments. | But the moments don't add up to a great play. This perhaps explains the tepid response to the play’s premiere at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse Saturday. According to Foon, a North Vancouver resident, one of the moments of farce was caused by an opening ODEON GRANVILLE, 881 Granville, oan Tab) ODEON WEST VAN, 1565 Marine, (922-6343) PARK, Cambie at 18th, (876-2747) PARK ROYAL, South Park Royal. However, even if this is taken into account, the Hunchback of Notre Dame still doesn’t seem to know whether it is a comedy ora tragedy. For example, Pierre Gringoire, well acted by Guy Bannerman, cries out to the King of France, “Support . the arts!” while the king is trying to decide whether to have Gringoire flogged or not. A very funny scene, but how does it fit in with the ‘pathos of Henry Woolf's Quasimodo, or the tortured anguish of Peter Haworth's Frollo? The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the story of Quasimodo, a deaf, one- eyed bellringer at Notre Dame Cathedral with a curved spine and one leg shorter than the other, and his love for the gypsy Esmerelda (an indifferent performance by Patricia Phillips) in Paris in 1482. Woolf plays Quasimodo to perfection and is, along with Bannerman, one of the stars of the show. Other plot elements in- clude Esmerelda’s search for her mother, Frollo’s search for his God and his love or lust, and that of various other characters, for the gypsy girl. Foon may be trying to tell too much in the space of two hours. There is an obvious moral to the play — we are as deformed inside as Quasimodo is outside, and Foon makes sure we get-the message through the asides from Quasimodo to the audience (“What do you see when you look in the mirror? Your face or mine?” However J.....vire also talks to the audience, and his message is a lighthearted one. Which one is_ the spokesman? But there are many good things about the play, in- cluding the performances of Bannerman, Haworth and Woolf, the scenery and lighting, and most of the individual scenes. The finai confrontation . Quasimodo and Frollo — one deformed on the outside and the other on the inside — is especially memorable. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, directed by Roger Hodgman and put on by the Vancouver Playhouse, is still an enjoyable evening's entertainment, even if it is ultimately a failure. It is being performed Monday through Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth at 8 p.m. until the middle of December. TIME BANDITS (M) Odeon Granville 2:30, 4:50, 7:20, 9:45. WV Odeon 7:30, 9:40.
