A7-Sunday News, November 9, 1980 meno x =— ee Dear Editor: Recent developments in the debate over Canada’s future constitutional arrangements have placed in grave danger the most fundamental of our democratic institutions, the constitutional monarchy and the supremacy of parliament. Consider the following alarming trends: *The refusal in the House of Commons October 10 of Prime Minister Trudeau to deny unequivocally future plans for the establishment of a Canadian republic, indicative of how the government appears to be playing a perilous game with the future of our nation; *The entrenching of a referendum clause in Section 42 of the proposed Constitutional Act, whereby any demagogue could ap- peal to the country’s worst Passions on an issue, without reference to the provincial legislatures. Referenda are alien to our system, which depends upon the sober judgement of elected of- ficials in parliament for decision-making; The placing of a Charter of Rights in the constitution, removing the traditional protection of our freedoms now guaranteed by the Queen-in-Parliament, and placing it into the hands of politicized courts; *The “presidentializing” of the Governor-General's office, deliberately downgrading the role of the Queen of Canada, and removing her from day-to- Get out to vote! Dear Editor: I looked around in dismay at an all candidates meeting held in the District last evening. There were fewer than 25 in the audience. We are so fortunate to live in a country where we can vote in a democratic manner. Many of us are very eager after an election to complain, but how many of us are eager to get out and listen to what the candidates have to say, and then take the time to get out and vote wisely? How many of us are eager to get out and work for the candidates of our choice, and then back them at the polls? Iam. My choice does not always win - in many instances because people who did back them could not be bothered getting out to vote. They always do. But what about you individuals out there? Your vote means so much. Please get out to the polls. B.M. Waters North Vancouver Omissions charged in NV candidates brochure Dear Editor: I have just seen the ex- pensive brochure of Crawford Kilian (autbor/teacher) running under NOVVA as a School Board candidate. Mr. Kilian fails to mention on his brochure that he is the same Crawford Kilian who - when the District of North Van- couver did not approve rezoning property to build the new Cove Chiff School - shouted angrily outside the District chambers that he would see that he was in a position after the municipal clections to turn around that decision. Those listening naturally assumed he would be running for a District Alderman. Mr. Kilian also fails to mention on his brochure that he ts the same person who helped organize parents and children tn their non-democratic closure to traffic of Deep Cove Road. I assume he has decided to run for School Board as that would be the easiest vehicle - uf he is elected - by which he can hope to have the new Cove Chff School for his children to attend That would appear to be his main Band show appreciated Dear Editor 1 would hike to capress my apprecianion to all those who arranged the recent Sunday Big Band Era show, and to those fine musicians for making it such a memorable event CD McMahon North Vancouver When you need professional advice and guaranteed ‘no-shrinkage cleaning of your valuable draperies call the Orapery Specialist at Roy's Ory Cleaners With requtar professional cleaning your draperies will look better and last longer Were not expensive — either our large volume iets us charge competitively low ices FALL SPECIAL 20% OFF Call for free pick-up and dolivery. John L. Aimers Chairman Monarchist Canada Ottawa League of North Shore ‘unsung hero’ Dear Editor: We are writing to pay tribute to a person who is currently seeking election as an alderman in the coming by-election in the City of North Vancouver. Ralph Hall has unselfishly given each of us, and many others who describe themselves as community workers, a great deal of imspiration and help which enabled our work to seem worthwhile and meaningful. In many instances it was Ralph Hall’s enthusiasm for our projects and help with our many campaigns that made things happen on the North Shore. History will be written about the North Shore someday, and interesting stories will be told about how the area developed and how the people responsed and worked together. Among the list of unsung heroes of the last twenty years will appear the name of Ralph Hall. Anne MacDonald Audrey Nygard Norma Porter North Vancouver Dinner Special | Tuesday thru Sunday ?
