They say Barry Parsons, who presently holds the position, would provide desirable continuity and they = are asking the North Vancouver School Board to help fund the position. Ron MacKay and Clara Bliss, on behalf of the school council, approached the school trustees at their regular meeting last week. Seycove is the first school in North Van to be funded by both the District council and the school board. Under the arrangement, the Distnct provides $700 a month to the school board toward the employment of a school coordinator The school board hires coordinators for all the schools on a 10-month per year contract” basis The Seycove coordinator i no exception and his contract expires June 30 The distriet. however. is prepared to continue tts $700 contribution over the summer and has directed the sum to the Recreation Department. which plans to supply one of its staff members to position cover the during July and and a slim & trim new you! But MacKay and Bliss find this unacceptable. They say the recreation department person would be “running” the program at Seycove which was designed by someone else. We need someone who is known by the participants and is familiar with our concept.” Therefore, they contend the present coordinator 1s best suited for the job. They want the District to redirect its §700 to the school council for this position and they want the school board to make up the difference in salary — or at least to make a contribution, perhaps equal to the distnct’s $700 per month. However, school trustees contend that if they con- tribute toward a summer coordinator for Seycove, they would have to do the same for all the schools tn the distnect. This, they say, ts not only impractical, but ts outside their pumsdicQon “This is not a school board A5-Sunday News, June 29, 1980 epnoney problem,” said Alderman Ernest Sarsfield. “It has nothing to do with education, it is a community recreation problem.” At this stage, the recreation department has the Daistrict’s contribution and, according to Bliss, seems determined to put their own staff member on the job. “They're holding on tight,” said Bliss later in a telephone interview. She said the school’s current coordinator would “probably work for a nickel” just to keep the programs going. “But we don’t think that’s right.” So if they don't get any more money from the school board, they’re prepared to do battle with the recreation department, in hopes they could at least offer their coordinator $700 a month. The school board and the District are planning a joint meeting with Seycove representalives in early July to discuss this and other matters draperies by S.
