HOME & GARDEN Realtors support W. Van Fire Dept. oil tank program THE REAL ESTATE Board of Greater Vancouver showed its en- vironmental support for the West Vancouver Fire Department’s Operation Oil Tank Program on July 4 when Maureen Bragg, president of the board’s West Vancouver division, presented a cheque for $1,700 to Fire Chief Colin Evans. “The Real Estate Board is pleased to participate in this wor- thwhile program that will point the way towards a cleaner en- vironment in West Vancouver,” said Rosemary Barnes, president of the 7,700-member board. The fire department used the donation to print information brochures for homeowners and to purchase uniforms for student employees, who are documenting the addresses and site locations of approximately 5,500 underground oil tanks in West Vancouver. The District of North Vancouver is also conducting the oil-tank program. Underground oj] tanks have been installed since 1945 to pro- vide oil to furnaces of single-fami- ly homes. Although most of these tanks are no longer in use, many, which have not been removed or properly pumped out and filled with sand, have been abandoned with oil still in them. Leaking oil, caused by a punctured tank, has already made its way into ditches, storm drains, creeks and the ocean - so homeowners are urged to make a point of reading the brochure that informs of the en- vironmental damage associated with old oil tanks and the proper procedures to render them en- vironmentally safe.
