Home on the range WESTERN movies and the British Columbia range inspire an exhibition of photography and video at Presentation House. Getting it Together in the Country, by Rodney Graham, is a collection of three recent works and an early photograph- ic project. Fishing on a Jetty is a large painted photograph which Graham calls “a not-too-serupulous reconstruction of a shot in Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief.” The photo features himself, playing Cary Grant’s character, hiding from the police. He is disguised as a sports fisherman, with a hat and sunglasses. How I became a Ramblin’? Man is a video projection work, and features the artist as a singing cowboy meandering across a British Columbian range. It has drawn comparisons to John Ford’s The Searchers in composition and framing, but has an -* idyllic mood rather than the angst of classic Westerns... Rodney Graham was born in Matsqui in 1949 and studied art history at UBC and at Simon Fraser University. His work © has been included in several international exhibitions. f .
