While he may have been offering up his thoughts on how to prepare for war, I wonder if his comment isn’t an appropriate “mantra” for today’s politicians and local councillors, particularly it comes to the subject uraging cigarette smoking among the young adult population. After telling all the view- ers about dates and times of airing, the commercial went on to proudly proclaim, both verbally and on screen, that the event was being brought co us courtesy of Export ‘A’. i wonder if TSN should stand for The Sports Network or The Smokers Network? If we, as adults, are going to continue being too stupid to realize the damage we're doing to our- selves, or simply don’t give a rat’s arse (a recent study revealed 85% of adult smok- ers don’t want to stop killing themselves prema- turcly), then can we ar least show some backbone when it comes to talking intelli- gently to our children. We nurture, educate and love our young people but are indirectly responsible as parents and adults for caus- ing the premature death of 50% of all the kids we know who smoke or are at risk to high levels of second-hand smoke in bars, restaurants and yes, at home. The real prablem is we don’t seem to have the guts to demand our politicians take a firm stand on the issue of banning smoking in all public places, as well as banning mention of any and all forms of tobacco-related products and names around amateur and professional sporting events. Because of this nothing much is going t change. What’s the purpose in taking so much time, effort and energy bringing up our Nippers when we start killing them off before they’re even finished growing? There is something frighteningly wrong with a society that puts moncy ahead of children, and unless the people we elect (locally, provincially and federally) act aggressively to protect our youth, they are doomed to repeat the disasters of our own genera- tion. North Shore elections are coming up later this vear. Check out how your local representatives voted (or didn’t!) last time around on the issue of smoking in pub- lic establishments. Did they sit on their hands or abstain from voting at all for fear of tipping the proverbial boat? Or, did they represent the feelings of the vast majority of the people chat elected them and made some tough but valuable choices for our future gener- ations?
