Protect credit cards and PINs THE North Vancouver RCMP offer some tips to sninimize your risk of the fraudulent use of your credit cards or per- sonal identification numbers (PINs): W@ don’t carry extra credit cards, your social insurance card, birth certificate or passport in vour wallet or purse except when necessary; @ when using an ATM or public telephone, shield the screen or keypad so that “shoulder surfers” cannot read your PIN or other data as you enter them; Brake ATM, credit card and other receipts with you, and either save them in a safe place or destroy them in such a way that they can’t be read. Also, shred pre-approved credit card offers. Dumpster divers can get them from the trash; @ cancel all unused credit card accounts. Even though you don’t use them, their account numbers are recorded tn your credit report which is full of data that can be used by identity thieves.
