The federally funded initiative was begun in 1995 as a way to boost civic pride, conmuunity spirit and environmentai awareness. West Vancouver is gearing up for a win in the 20,001 to 50,000 population category. “We're going for the gold,” said parks superintendent Bill Reid, whose municipality was a provin- cial finalist last year. Judging is July 30. This is the first year the District of North Vancouver has been involved. The District is competing with Kelowna to represent the province in the 50,001 to 100,000 population category. Judging in the District is July 31. Fifty tive per cent of the judging is based on landscaped area, floral arrangements and turf, but the judges also look at residential neighborhoods, heritage conservation, environmental initiatives and community involvement.
