Reformers Dear Editor: [read with considerable surprise: and an enormous amount of dismay the letter to othe editor: by RH. Drummond, which appeared in your May ? paper, Tam surprised by the fact that Mr. Drummond chooses to call into question com- ments made in fan Noble’s April 6 News article (Reformers Wrangle Over Ethics), which volunteers who helped me in my cam- paign and I know to be true. Mr. Drummond did try to have us stop making phone calls seeking support for my candidacy during the .cam- paign, becatse of what he claimed were the number of negative complaints he was receiving about the other candidate, Our. coffee. party. on the. Sunshine Coast was cancelled - without my knowledge or the -knowledge. of my-, campaign. manager, aoe In fact, both the president of) the” Association and the Chairman of the Selection ‘Committee took advantage of every “opportunity. to. inter- vene on behalf of the other candidate at my expense, throughout the entire cam- paign. ’ The failure of these two individuals ‘to contain their Constituency ., cuthusiasin for the other cane didate not only reflects on the democratic principles to which Reform is undeniably committed, but lett avery bitter taste in. my mouth for participating in such a farcical process. I can accept that [last the nomination, I can even accept that two misguided individu- als have been less than totally diligent in carrying out the duties of their office. What I cannot accept is the president of the con- stituency association for the Reform party in this riding placing his own interests ahead of the interests of the membership and the party. He did that when he asked me to write denying the con- tents of the April 6 article a few days after it had appeared ‘in the, paper, He did that when he sug- gested that I call the editor of the newspaper to claim I had ~ been misquoted in-the article, even though | had not. He continues to place his own interests above the party by drawing to the public's attention an“ internal party conflict that has little or noth- ing to do with the outstand- ing slate of candidates . chat the Reform party has running in this important election. Axel Duch West Vancouver. - 7 Examine North Van's restrictions on B&Bs "Dear Editor: Re: New Bed and Breakfast Licensing in North Vancouver, . I was staying at one of my favorite retscats, Laburnum Cottage (1388 Terrace Ave. in North Vancouver), cele- brating my birthday weekend, when T saw your article on Bed and Breakfast licensing in © North Vancouver in the April 25 North Shore News. * Bed and Breakfast restric- tions need to be based on size, location and other specifics. Generally, T agree with licensing Bed and Breakfasts in our community, but [ do want to urge the local council to rethink the restriction of three rooms. What is this restriction based upon? Surely, there must be some consideration given to the nature and size of cach estab- lishment, plus the availability of parking. The number three has just been magically extracted from a hat. I applaud the council for approaching the issue of Bed and Breakfast licensing for our community, but I hope the bad experience of some residents will not cause council to hastily institute a “broad brush” set of restric- tions that punish and limit existing B&R operations that quietly, professionally and beautifully showcase our North Shore. Poor Doug Collins: it's easy to forgive a foo! but as for your paper, how do you sleep at night? Steven Deschamps Vancouver sehamps@direct.ca advertorial, May 21/97 AN EARLY ELECTION Last week, during the Leaders Debate on television, Mr. Chretien said he had called an early election because the other parties had already started campaigning!! if you belleve that's a good reason to-spend more than $200 million on an election, earlier in a mandate than any other time In the past 70 years, I've got a bridge | can sell you. (t's more likely, of course, that the real reasons for calling an election are an attempt to maintain control of the Ottawa money trough, coupled with a desperate bid to unseat a few of those annoying Reform MPs who have spoiled the "Ottawa Old Goys Club”. Just think how frustrating it must have been for the PM to have 50 Reforrn MPs constantly reminding him of taxpayers’ 1 dollars wasted on MP travel junkeis, gold plated pensions that would be illegal in the private sector, and his blatant disregard for the public will on justice issues like the “faint hape clause”. Getting rid of us though, is turning out to be the Prime Minister's “faint hope”, because Reform support has already grown past the point where the polisters are identifying Reform as the Official Oppositon, With just under two weeks to go we are now aiming to, at the very feast, reduce the Liberals to minority government status. ° ISSUES A steady flow of letters, phone calls, and J} visitors to my office in the past 24 days have confirmed that jobs, taxation, the justice system, immigration policy, and paying down our enormous federal debt, continue to be issues of major importance in this Riding. Everyone can. see that the Liberals have (a) failed to deliver on the Promise of Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, (5) significantly increased the tax burden for the average wage earner, (c) retained the GST and even expanded the range of goods and services it covers, (d) actually managed to make our streets more dangerous through ridiculous measures ilke wide open conditional sentencing, (8) refused to acknowledge and deal with ongoing problems in our immigration Programs, and (f) In just 3-1/2 years managed to add $100 billion to our federal debt and about $5 billion a year to our Interest payments on that debt.. There is another issue though, which despite being of great concern to a large number of people, has received surprisingly little attention up to this point in the election campaign. That Issue is the frustration and anger being caused for consumers by what are seen as unreasonable and heavy- handed government controls on access to natural herbs, botanicats, vitamins and food supplements. NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS The official position of the Reform Party of Canada with respect to the banning of certain natural / herbal dietary supplements by the Health Protection Branch (HPB) is § two-pronged in its approach. Firstly, Reform’s Health Critic, Dr. Grant Hill, tabled a motion in the House of Commons earlier this year stating that: ; “The Reform Party insists that the Federal Government be responsible for demonstrating harm to human. health of @ specific dosage arid form of natural herbs, botanicals, vitamins, minerals, and homeopathics before it can impose any restriction on trade in, ‘or consumption of, such substances in that dosage or form”. In addition, Dr, Hill has on several { occasions over the past few months asked, and/or demanded, that. the Minister “of Health create a new category under the % Food and Drug Act to deal specifically with the products mentioned in our. motion..We ° feel that this additional category in the FDA would facilitate the quick and easy approval — of most of the products noted, but unfortunately, the Liberal Government has refused to budge from an entrenched position which interferes with your informed | freedom to choose. The Minister's stand is, of course, entirely consistent with the Liberal | Government belief that’ only a big paternalistic bureaucracy-in Ottawa knows what is best for you. In fairness though, inspectors with the | HPB should not be blamed for the present situation with respect to .the removal of some products fron the ‘shelves of health food stores. Those inspectors. have ho’ choice. but to ‘carry our. their’ jobs as mandated in the’Act, and have ended up taking the majority of the criticism =: critic'sm which should really be levelled at the Prime Minister and his Liberal government. Reform can help with the effort to change the FDA,: and will support your freedom of choice, but we need to keep the pressure focussed. in the right place, and on the right people.” THOUGHTS ON RECALL | During the Leader's Debate, when the Prime Minister was asked whether he supported giving Canadians the power to recall MPs who. were not property. . vepresenting thelr constituents, he said it ‘ was not a good idea because it would lead to too many by-elections. This Cclearty amounts to an admission by the . PM that most Liberal MPs are forced to | ignore the wishes of their constituents In favour of the [arty line, and that the threat of recall would erode his control over them..
