WEST Vancouver's Cypress Park hosted little league opening day last Sunday, kick-

Local youth honored

SIX North Shore youth
were honored Thursday
night for their uncom-
mon achievements.

The first annual Youth
Unlimited Awards were held
April 17 at Hoillyburn
Country Club, with 155 well-
wishers in attendance. The

‘awards are modeled after the

Kinsmen Foundation’s Know
No Limits Youth Awards, and
recognize the accomplish-
ments of young pecple who
have overcome adversity to
make a difference in their
community.

Each of the six honored
youth received a commemora-
tive plaque and a cash award
of $300.

The award recipients are:
@ Edward Chen, for commu-
nity service: 2 Taiwanese teen
who has helped ease the cu)-
ture shock for foreign and
exchange students through

counselling at West Van sec-
ondary.

Jeremy Walters, for creative
arts: a West Van Secondary
student who has overcome
visual impairment to become
a gifted, surreal artist.

West Van secondary graduate
who coaches and manages
community soccer.

BB Jason Bristow, for entrepre-
neurship and innovation: 2
14-year-old Rockridge stu-
dent who has launched his
own web-page design compa-
ny despite a learning disability.
@ Judy-Ellen Saunders, for
courage: a 17-year-old
Sutherland student who tat-
tles health complications from
being born 12-weeks prema-
ture while maintaining an
89%-average in her studies
and being an enthusiastic vol-
unteer.

@ Athena Macapagal, for
environmental activism: a
Grade 11 student at St.
Thomas Aquinas who is presi-
dent of her school’s environ-
