radar trap

{1 SURPRISED a friend
the other day by taking
the argument against

_ photo radar,

While the intentions of
police, firemen, and ambu-
Jance crews are noble —
they want us to slow down
and stop killing each other
with our cars — the flutter-
brained politicians. have
actually admitted that all
they want is our money.

Our (2) government is
proving itself to be com-
pletely unconcerned about
our driving habits. Victoria
seems to thrive on B.C.'s
reputation of having some
of the worst drivers in the
world.

You see, if or when you
receive a photo radar issued
ticket, the registered owner
of the vehicle is fined $100
but no penalty points are
given. This lack of points is
due to the fact that you
aren't legally proven to be
the driver of the vehicle.

You can “nominate”
someone else if you are not
the driver, but that driver
will be given points as well
as a fine.

Insurance Company of
British Columbia (ICBC)
spokeswoman Leigh Carter
wants us to believe that
these non-owner/drivers will
pay the owners directly to
avoid penalty points but she
doesn't seem to realize that
“nominating” probably
won't be considered legal
proof any more than is a
photograph of a licence
plate. Or, if it is, everyone
should “nominate” Leigh

Before you jump in me
for sounding like a simple-
ton, please recall a previous
column when I quoted then-
Minister of Transportation
Jackie Pement as she boast-
ed about the wonderful way
the new system forced some
poor slob with 46 points on
his licence to fork over
$4,600. Now think about
that. Didn’t it occur to her
that this fellow had proven
himself a remarkably dan-
gerous driver?

A couple of violations is
not uncommon but 46
points! That's at least 15
speeding tickets but proba-
bly 4 combination of many
offenses. I mean, come on.
Take this menace off the
road, Jackie. Make the .
maniac take $4,600 worth of ,
re-training before he kills
somebody. At the very least,
Ms. Pement should have
forced that fellow to watch
those tasteless ICBC com-
mercials for 4,600 hours.

I am not, by the way, one
to use the argument that
photo radar is an invasion of
privacy or a violation of my
civil rights. ] knew my
rights and responsibilities
when I signed my driver's
license all those years ago. |
knew (cr thought) that own-
ing a driver’s licence was a
privilege that could be take
away.

Further, I've always
known the speed limits and
while ! don’t necessarily
agree with them, f know |
can be ticketed for breaking
them.

F also know that cam-
plaining is a fruitless
endeavor unless | can offer
some constructive alterna-
tives.
