Heywood served as officer in charge of the North Vancouver RCMP detachment from 1970 to _ 1974. He later served as chief of the Surrey detachment: while continu- ing to live on the North Shore. Heywood said the governing NDP has tried to spend its way to re-election, “but people are not being fooled. “In atime when the size and cost of government must be reduced, we must have people in power who can do it fairly and responsibly,” he said. ABOUT THIS time fast year, Rogers Cable customers were seething. By Bob Mackin Contributing Writer The Canadian cable giant had used the controversial negative- option billing scheme when it launched a menu of new specialty programming channels. Rogers’ phone lines were jammed with com- plaints. Many people cancelled their sub- scriptions in protest. A few disgruntied customers dis- played their fnistration by hurling rocks and tomatoes at Rogers’ trucks. Glenn Wong, Rogers’ new execu- tive vice-president and general man- ager for.B.C., chuckles at the irony. The tomatoes could have been prod- ucts of his previous employer, Western Greenhouse Growers Co- operative (a.k.a. B.C. Hot House). Wong, a 38-year-old West Vancouverite, joined Rogers at the beginning of this year to become the company’s top West Coast executive. He brings with him 15 years of mar- keting experience with Procter & Gamble, Nabob and B.C. Hot House. As president of the latter, he eared B.C. marketer of the year honors in 1994 from the American Marketing Association for turning the faltering, Surrey-based co-op into one of North America’s top vegetable growers. Wong was approached by Rogers late last year, but nearly passed up the opportunity because he wasn't satis- fied his work at B.C. Hot House was done. “My initial response was I’m so delighted, but I'm so wrapped up in doing what I'm doing night now,” Wong said. Rogers didn’t relent and Wong The Host Program is looking for volunteers to spend time once a week assisting newcomers learn more about Canadian life and helping them practice their English skills, Volunteer can earn about another culture and languagz and make new friends. Hot House taught me the immediacy of business and, again, doing things with very few resources and taking on global competitors,” he says. “It's a whole new industry to learn, but the core of any business is great customer relations and being part of your community.” Wong has been part of the North Shore community for four years as a resident of Caulfeild with wife Connie and two daughters (ages three and six). Rogers is looking to join him this year on the North Shore. Last sum- mer it purchased Shaw Cable’s Lower Mainland cable systems. including the North and. West Vancouver division. The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunica- tions Commission (CRTC) has yet to decide the fate of the deal. While improving customer rela- tions is a top priority, Wong recog- nizes the information revolution is in full swing and cable companies will likely face new challenges from satel- lite and telephone companies. B.C. * Tel has already tested providing tele- vision service to residents at Concord Pacific condominiums and is lobby- ing the CRTC for the right to compete in the cable TV market. “My background is all competi- tion, I have never not been in a com- petitive environment in my profession- al life" he says. “I think competition brings out the best in people and I don't suspect this industry is going to be any different. Just make sure it's 3 level playing field and everyone’s got the same opportunities to compete,” Working for Rogers at its B.C. head office in Burnaby’s Metrotown complex means being closer to home and family. Working for Rogers could also mean more work from home. “The delineation between home and office is getting blurred. J like the fact that my kids can watch me.work and do their own thing beside me:I'm _ not suggesting that’s quality time, but I like the idea they can see their father working.” Wong has frequently brought his daughters to work in an effort to expose them to his business environ- ment and demonstrate “that work is not something that dad does, or that men do, it’s something that people ~ do.” et JAMES POYHER MAIOR PERSONAL INTORY | Free initial Consultation 988-6321 408-145 Chadwick Court =f.
