22 - Wednesday, January 22, 1992 — North Shore News NUOR TH SH.O NV actors update classic fairy tale DIRECTOR JAMES Doyle has no problem conveying ex- citement about his new production Cinderella Goes West. His enthusiasm charges through every word and he would willingly spill out the whole plot to elabo- rate on the new juicy bits he has added to the fairy tale classic. Doyle is a founding member of the Act 1 Scene | theatre company based in North Vancouver. The group has done similar pan- tomimes in previous years which entertained local audiences. By Barbara Black News Reporter “The year before last we did Sinderella, for adults only,"’ says Doyle, emphasizing the ‘‘sin.” “This year, I'm taking the story of Cinderella and she’s going to go western.” Updates to the standard include 5 um * NEWS photo Cindy Goodman turning the pumpkin into a ‘41 vintage Cadillac, the ‘“‘reai Mc- Coy." The ballroom dancing is replaced by a hoe-down complete with trick-ropers, square dancing and fire-eating. And all this eclectic talent was feund on the North Shore. Where did Doyle manage to find a trick-roper in the ranchless sur- roundings of the Lower Mainland? “Amazingly enough, Bill Clark’s (set and lighting designer) mom!” he laughs. ‘She looks like a real mom and she’s the last person in the world you would think would be a trick-roper.’’ But she agreed to come out of retire- ment to add an authentic western element to Cinderella Goes West. The story concerns one Baby Beefburger, son of the Baron and Baronness of Beef, who is due to be married and holds a hoe-down in honor of the occasion. Cinderella, her two stepsisters and her wicked stepmother (now a Diamond til character) live in a dusty old saloon rather than a cas- tle. In true pantomime fashion, the two ugly stepsisters, Goldiedigger and Oiliewell, are played by men. “The ugly sisters are always fighting.’”’” says Doyle. “At one point they do this sword fencing thing with powder puffs and when they look in the mirror their reflec- tions are a dog and a horse, al- though they think they look beautiful.” Rather than having the obligatory nude woman picture over the bar in the saloon there is a real woman (not nude) in a pic- ture frame, who reacts to the ac- tion going on below. “The costumes are very lively and bright.and the sets are fan- tastic,’’ Doyle enthuses. Of course, the pantomime can always be interpreted on two levels: the purely slapstick, literal level and the innuendo which ap- peals to the adults. Doyle says there is plenty in the show for both adults and children (age 5 and up). Almost the entise cast hails from the North Shore, which includes former political candidate Richard the Troll as a ‘’49er-type charac- ter.” Original, ‘‘foot-stomping”’ live music is provided by a guitarist and fiddler. The show takes place at the Centennial Theatre on Feb. 7, and 8 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12/10/9 and can be reserved by calling 985-2932 or 985-2590. ” Shelley Willams, Advertising Consultant, with Cell City owner Bruce NEWS ADVERTISER SAYS: ‘Cell City rings praise | after giant month’ Listen to our advertisers.
