20-minute delays at
Porteau Bluffs, 25
kilometres north of
Horseshoe Bay, for rock
scaling. Times of the
delays will be between 9
a.m. and 4 p.m. Mon-
days to Thursdays and
between 9 a.m. and 12:30
p.m. on Fridays.

Imported kettles may
pose heaith hazard

B.C. CHILDREN'S Hospital has
issued a warning to parents to be
cautious about imported kettles
which may cause serious illness in
babies.

The warning was prompted by
the case of an infant recently ad-
mitted to the hospital with high
levels of lead in the bloodstream.

Investigation reveaied the
baby’s infant formula was
prepared with water boiled in a
kettle imported by the family
from their native tran.

“This is the second time this
year we’ve seen a baby sick due to
the use of a Middle Eastern kettle
in which water was boiled far in-
fant formuta, said Dr. Gillian
Lockitch, head of Children’s
clinical biochemistry laboratory.

“The danger is greatest to in-

Both cases involved children of
Iranian families who had used
imported kettles, she said.

Long term, high leve! exposure
to lead can cause severe
behavioral disorders and mental
retardation.

The dangerous kettles are not
sold in Canada but may be im-
ported as gifts from the Middle
East.

Children’s Hospital is offering a
free, chemical analysis for families
concerned that their imported ket-
tles may be leaching lead into
drinking water.
