weekend vacation was supposed
to be a time for Thelma (Geena
Davis} and Louise (Susan Saran-

HANDSWORTH'S BANDS came
home from MusicFest Canada with
a cache of medals.

Four of Handsworth’s bands —
junior and senior jazz, intermedi-
ate “A‘’’ and = senior concert
bands — won a total of two gold
and two silver medals at the Ca-
nadian finals. The bands are
directed by Bob Rebagliati and
Keith Woodward.

Consisting of 8,000 participants,
MusicFest was held May 15-19 at
the Vancouver Trade and Conven-
tion Centre.

Bands must qualify for MusicFest
by earning either first or second

Now the efficient waitress and
the harried housewife are barrel-
ling across the badlands of New
Mexico with a swarm of anury
lawmen on the tail of their T-Bird.

And no one ts mare surprised at
their luck than the suburban
outlaws themselves. But it’s not
just a wild and woolly chase
sprinkled with whoops and
gunplay (despite what the TV ads
indicate). Granted, the iemale
buddy comedy has the same ex-
plosions and quips as Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or
Lethal Weapon, but it’s also laced
with poignant comments about
women getting stuck with the fuz-
zy end of the follipop.

Both Susan Sarandon and Geena
Davis shine in the best written fe-
male leads in years with tough,
funny and endearing perfor-
mances. Harvey Keitel also excels
as the cop torn between his badge
and his conscience.

It’s not often you get a movie

Handsworth bands

from MusicFest

The Junior Jazz Ensemble placed
second at the New West Jazz Fes-
tival while the Senior Jazz extend-
ed their first-place winning streak
at that competition to four years.
The Intermediate ‘‘A’’ Concert
Band achieved gold level stand-
ards at both the Kiwanis and Co-
quitiam Concert Band Festivals
while the Senior Concert Band
secured two silver medals at the
same festivals,

At MusicFest, the two jazz
ensembles won gold medals while
the concert bands were awarded
silvers.

best roles as an eccentric British
Lord who thinks he’s fesus Christ
in this bizarre satire of England's
pevileged few, And by bizarre, |
mean actors suddenly bursting in-
to music hall tunes and an abrupt
reversal of personality for O'Toole
when he undergoes therapy. Al-
though the object of the filny’s
scathing wit is more than a bit
remote to our culture, it’s still
amusing.
