36 — Sunday, February 10, 1991 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES No shortage of agencies willing to help seniors PHEW — THAT’S the last time I do that. Give you a bunch of references without giving the source. If it’s not too late for some of you, herewith: Senior’s Guide to Federal Pro- grams and Services — write to: Seniors Secretariat, Health and Welfare Canada, Ottawa, Ontario KIA 0K9, or phone (613) 952- 7606. Choosing Wellness — telephone the Minister of Health, 660-2421, as in your blue pages. And now, the promised list of local agencies that have us aging citizens in mind. It’s culled from a very comprehensive pamphlet published in Surrey by Mecca Ventures, and it covers the Greater Vancouver area. It’s called Community Resource Directory, it’s free, and your local library has copies. I’ve listed only those organizations in West Van- couver and North Vancouver that you and IJ would be likely to use. Eleanor Godley THE VINTAGE YEARS First, and most obvious, the distinctly seniors’ centres, then the seniors’ networks and counselling sources, and the various recreation and community centres that have programs and diversions for their elderly fringe. SILVER HARBOUR, 144 East 22nd St., North Vancouver, 980- 2474. An easy block from the Lonsdale bus, offering weekday lunch, supported by the city and district and its own bootlaces, it lists all manners of classes either serious or for pleasure, a library, cards, music, outings, you'll find them all. WEST VANCOUVER SENIORS’ CENTRE, Marine Drive at 2Ist Street, 926-4375. Steps from the busline, offering literally dozens of activities to stimulate and satisfy, whether physical or mental, a _ prized billiards room and busy kitchen, daily phone calls and transport for shut-ins, it too is a very lively piace. CAPILANO COMMUNITY SERVICES CENTRE, 600 West Queens, 988-7115, is adjacent to the bus stop (used to be Delbrook School), acts as a sort of clearing house for information for the older population. It offers brochures and en--,; courages volunteer participation in its own and other programs, and also houses the so-called Red Cross Cupboard from which one can borrow sick room and disability equipment. SENIORS’ HUB MISSION is an arm of the above, operating out of a small office in the Delbrook shopping area, 3711 Deibrook Ave., 988-1129, also easily achieved by bus. Volunteer drivers are available to the Hub, daily check-up calls, a monthly social gathering and referral ser- vice are part of their program. DEEP COVE DOLLARTON COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, 929-7981, doesn’t have a special seniors’ focus. Its roster of oppor- tunities can be shared with young and old alike, which is refreshing. The range is all the way from bird watching to weight training, and includes Scottish country dancing and calligraphy for beginners. NORTH SHORE NEIGH- BOURHOCD HOUSE, 225 East 2nd St. in North Vancouver, 987-8138, is only one long block from Lonsdale, and also serves the entire extended family but =a HARRISON HOT SPRINGS does have a number of special seniors’ programs. It offers a hot Iunch daily except Thursdays, also has a special seniors’ social dance every Monday, and chair exer- cises, and home visiting for non-mobile seniors. Volunteers for this program are always welcome. The annual membership is only $2.50, courtesy of the United Way. NORTH VAN RECREATION CENTRES are staffed seven days a week and have a lot of specifically seniors’ leisure activi- ties. “ALCOHOL » DRUG + CO-DEPENDENCY PROBLEM?
