24 - Friday, October 19, 1990 - North Shore News Local agencies mark Home Support Week NORTH SHORE agencies are marking B.C.'s fifth annual Home Support Week to Oct. 25. In B.C.. over 40,000 seniors, disabled clients and families in crisis are able to live independent- ly at home thanks to the efforts of community workers and volun- teers. Home support services are evolving to meet the changing needs of the health care system and its clients. For example, quick response programs assess people before they are admitted to the hospital and appropriate can- didates are discharged to home with 24-hour home support care until they are able to manage on their own. In Victoria, statistics show that in the last two years, appropriate use of additional home support service has decreased the wait list fer facility beds by 40 per cent and the percentage of hospital beds occupied by patients awaiting facility placement has decreased from 10 per cent to four per cent. In) Vancouver, the use of pailiative care teams can maintain 50 per cent of terminally ill clients at home until the final week of life. On the North Shore, services are provided by the North Shore Home Support Services Society and Para-Mecd Health Services. which began in 1974 as the home care division of Extendicare Health Services.
