Mayor calls for parkway review FATAL MVA AFTERMATH From page 1 to organize a blockade of Mount Seymour Parkway unless North Vancouver District and North Vancouver RCMP take action to reduce the number of accidents that are occurring on the parkway. “If we have to be like the Mohawk Indians in Quebec and block off that road, then (IE or- ganize it,’ Matkovich told the News. He said that recently installed planters in the middle of Mount Seymour Parkway restrict, traffic visibility and are a hazard to drivers. Muatkovich also criticized Vancouver District Council and Mayor Marilyn Baker for rejecting resident requests to install a teattic light at the Mount) Seymour Jarkway and Berkley intersection, “He seems noo omatta what we express to council they won't listen. said Miathovieh. Marilyn Baker said its too expensive to North put a traffic light there. I'd like to ask her that if the next person who gets killed there is your daughter, how expensive would it be ther to put in a traffic light?” “There’s a big problem with the God damned road. How many people do we have to kill before something is done?”’ Baker said she has asked the RCMP for ‘fa complete review’ of the traffic on Mount Seymour Parkway and to make recommen- dations to council on any im- provements needed. “We've had two fatal accidents there in 16 months. But that area is the most heavily patrolled in the district. and, in fact, our police had ao radar trap set up fst down the road from the accident and were on the scene immediately,” said Baker, whe called the Satuc- day accident a “tragedy."* “its always a taredy when this type of ching happens ta a popu lar family. They (the Maiers) were known to my kicds.”* Another ates resident, Arlene Lima, said she canvassed the opi- nions of several area residents on Monday about traffic conditions on Mount Seymour Parkway. The majority of those canvass ed, she said, feel the road is hazard. “They feel that the island at Berkley where you make a left turn is far too long and Uthat we definitely need a light there.*" said Lima. ‘tt’s a nightmare. Its ia speedway and there will be more accidents there, [Us going to get far worse.” But ROMP Cpl. Ewen Peeethy, the former head of the North Vancouver ROMP traffic division who owas recently transferred to the Mission ROMP detachment, said there is no need tor a trattte Hight at Berkles and 9 Moun Seymour Parkway. He added that he does not con- sider the area to be a problem. “The balance of the accidents have always been at night when there is no traffic. Lights are only good if you obey them,’’ said Freethy. *‘It (speed) is a thing that does creep up when you're (police) not there. [t's not a horrendously dangerous road. That road js built for 70 or 80 kilometres per hour."" He added that the district safety council has considered installing a traffic light at Berkley and Mount Seymour Parkway, but that “there's just not enough trattic to warrant it." “to don't think there's a need ior @ traffic light there right now. The need will eventually arise with alt-af othe construction taking phice there.” said Freethy. bunerat services for Dis and Linda Mitier will be held todas at t2opoam. at the Mount Sesion United Church Ao reeeption will follow at othe Deep Coxe Vieht Club. By SURJ RATTAN News Repjorter Upper Fraser Valley district coroner Ralph DeCoste said Tuesday that Rex Neff, 45, was found Sunday morning by a B.C. Hydro worker at about 10:30 just off the Trans-Canada Highway at Herring Island. DeCoste said Neff, a Richmond resident who was married and had two teenage children, was found in his grey Volkswagen Rabbit. An autopsy on Neff, he said, revealed that ‘‘there appears to be some carbon monoxide poison- ing’’ involved in the veteran West Vancouver firefighter’s death. He added that more toxicity tests will have to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death, But DeCoste confirmed that a vacuum cleaner hose was found ‘Yeading from the rear of the car to the left window."" He added that the police had ruled out foul play in Neff's death. Fitends and family of Neff's had been distributing posters of the missing firefighter across the country ir hopes of turning up clues that might have led to his « hereabouts. Neff had finished his last shift June 13 at 8 a.m. and had had breakfast with a friend. In the afternoon he visited with his mother in Huntington near the Sumas border crossing.
