A6-Sunday News, May 11, 1980 editorial page NEWS VIEWPOINT Transit priority West Vancouver council is considering an expenditure of up to $10,000 a year to subsidize 50 cent taxicab rides for 150 Cypress Park Estates commuters between their homes and the nearest bus stop. We can suggest a much better use for such money. If any extra transit funds are available, they should first be spent on a direct daily bus service between West Van and Licns Gate Hospital. The present public transit link between West Van and the hospital is abominably inadequate. It involves at least two changes of bus, often with lengthy waits in between. Even from Ambleside the journey can take an hour or more, compared to a mere 15 minutes by car. West Van, with 30% of its population aged 60 or over, has an exceptionally high number of residents needing to visit the hospital, whether for personal treatment or to see elderly relatives or friends. Many of them no longer drive a car. The minimum return taxi fare is now $11 or more (if your taxi gets stuck im traffic jams it can run as high as $18). Few pensioners can afford that kind of money. So they are left to battle at the bus stops with the heat of summer and the chilling rain of winter, and to spend two to three hours on the road for a half-hour hospital visit. For a wealthy community like West Van. with such a high proportion of senior citizens, the situation is a disgrace. There should be a direct Blue Bus service between Dundarave and the hospital at least four times daily. First things first, please! Yes,no and maybe The problem with the referendum question is that it’s upside down. Psychologically, people dislike saying “no” -- especially when, in terms of Canadian unity, “no” means “yes” and “yes” means “no”. The .simple, honest question for Quebeckers should have been: “Do you want to stay in Canada?” Even that could prove tricky, however. The honest answer from La Belle Province might then be: “Yes and no -- with reser- vations.” sunday news north shore news 4139 Lonsdale Ave North Vancouver BC V7M 2H4 (604) 985-2131 NEWS ADVERTISING CLASSIFIED CIRCULATION 985-2131 980-0511 986-6222 986-1337 Publisher Peter Spec k Associate Publisher Editor-in-Chiet Advertising Director Robert Graham Noel Wright trn Cardwell Classified Manager & Office Administrator Berns Hihiard Production Tit Fearne is Faye Me Crae Managing Editor Andy Fraser News Editor Photography Chris (loyd b Wsweoeth) (te R See Accounting Supervisor Bartara Keen North Shore News [oe deda TORS an an cde(ue bed ” by DieewSpraper and cesatbetend) Gerdes Se frecdube Wb bart ib bea rw cL the bowie Tae AGE OS Gutbsbed each) Wedmemcday ane day Noth Strore Bree ress ott aed Mstrefoatesdd tee every doce of the Neots Sybian es Second Clas Mal Pe giust haben Nuieritoas sth Subse ryptioos $y jee yea bate Cae te SOP Ny eth tae Fees Vers (tO AIL hits center vated Ne tsp ore sctobt ’ eyetae! ‘ ‘ i Veet pits Ant yee Tee who t vias ’ rnd ae Ce Ce 0 Vet Pah Es Tac tat ATION a 50,870 49.913 G@ona SR’ 2 Wednesda, Smal day THIS PAPER IS RECYCLABLE | | | | | | | | | | NOSTALGIA: Remember the heady heyday of the national Social Credit Party back in the early sixties when wt once won 30 seats in Ottawa, thereby holding a decisive balance of power between John Diefenbaker's 116 MPs and the Gnts’ 100” Six vears later the federal Socreds disappeared, having been hiyacked by French Canada and translated into an exclusively Quebec party the Creditustes. under the late Real Caouette and his successor Fabien Roy occasionally whatever Ive dered won became of Robert Thomp- leader of the federal Socreds at the peak of their the the wests son, influence in soaring sixties and an MP for 10 years Now the West Van Chamber of Commerce has the answer [rt Robert Dhompson provided presently Tranity Western College in tangles vice president ot wothei puest speaker at this Wednesday s breakfast meeting at the AP Restaurant oan Dundarave Phas Cerpone The buture ds Coming Are You Reads’ Starting time as YOoaom and af vou want to find out whether vow are ready you may oStaEE oboe utr tate tes reserve a 88 fo meal the kel bes calling 826 OGL Which remtnes ome “ Novant aw West Nat tyook Moorttoanmeb rt soot vet J pom vor otmpap ht des wars e Uhian tot dle aloig ‘ Pde SEND THE BRMSH A NOTE OF THANKS AND THEN SEND THEM A BILL FOR THE DAMAGES TO OUR EMBASSY!
