inquest nixed

A CORONER investigating the July 18 death of a 20-year-old
Vancouver man, who leapt to his death from Lynn Canyon’s Twin
Falls Bridge, has decided not to order an inquest of the (ragedy.

Coroner Ken Pitt said the area is well sign-posted and the
hazards of diving into the canyon’s waters are well known.

An autopsy showed Stephen Daryl Lynch suffered massive lower
back injuries and massive damage to his internal organs after hit-
ting rock and tumbling into the water. The/ official cause of death
is drowning. |

Men fined for
fishing violations

TWO MEN were fined $1,000 cach Monday in North Vancouver
provincial court after they pleaded guilty to violating Fisheries Act
regulations on the Capilano River. /

Andrew McKenzie Gordon, 28, of Mission, and Jay Allan Lam-
bright, 31, of Maple Ridge, were originally charged with fishing in
a closed portion of Capilano River and illegally catching fish by
snagging and possessing more than the legal limit.

The charges were laid in connection with a July 8 incident in
which 27 coho were taken with treble hooks from a pool just below
the Capilano River hatchery weir at approximately 2 a.m.

The area is permanently closed to fishing.  -

The two were fined $500 on each charge and had their fishing
rods, treble hooks and the 27 coho confiscated.

Crown counsel entered a stay of proceedings in the charge of
possessing more than the daily allowance of coho.

(Private skateboard
ramps vetoed

A MOTION to deny the construction of ska(eboard ramps on
private property was recently passed by North Vancouver District
Council.

Despite opposition from aldermen Mary Segal and Murray
Dykeman based on the difficulty of enforcement and safety
aspects, concerns of noise and nuisance raised by Ald. Joan
Gadsby wen out.

Construction recently began on a skateboard bow! at William
Griffin Park, near the west side of Mosquito Creek.

Renovations
to Start soon

WORK WILL start soon on $344,000 worth of renovations to
North Shore Neighbourhood House (NSNH).

North Vancouver City Council gave low bidder Ole’s Construc-
tion Ltd. the nod Monday night to do Phase [ of the planned
two-phase project. The revamping of NSNH has been under
discussion since 1985.

The first phase will include various wheetchair ramps, wheelchair
and handicapped accessible washrooms, updated kitchen facilities,
a new parking lot end new offices, as well as the upgrading of
mechanical electrical and fire alarm systems.

The city will be reimbursed $76,000 in funds that NSNH has
already raised from government and private donors.

Prevent
forest fires

ALONG WITH the warmer weaiher comes an increased chance of
fire in the wilderness areas around the North Shore.

The North Vancouver District Fire Department reminds the
public to adhere to preventative measures currently in effect for
local wilderness areas. The public is asked to refrain from smoking
while in the wilderness and to stay on marked trails. Campfires are
banned.

If smoke or fire is spotted in a wilderness area, call the North
Vancouver District Fire Department immediately at 985-2525. In
West Vancouver call the West Vancouver District Fire Department
at 922-2345,
