The lines that were omitted ex- plained that I was in the midst of packing for a quick trip to three states — North and South Dakota and Nebraska ~- helping me achieve my ‘eventual goal of visiting ail 50. Does that clear up any confu- sion? More about that bit of travel later. by Barbara McCreadie Next, a health and welfare report. A few weeks ago I wrote about the grave illness of Emily, one of our beloved pussycats. Not exactly a travel column, perhaps, but since leaving our homes and pets when we go away is always a concern, Emily's near-death upon our return prompted the article. What was really surprising was the number of nice people who called and wrote io express their concern for one sick little cat! Well, Emily has a new name. Our veterinarian calls her ‘“‘Emily the Miracle Cat’’, and you'll agree the name fits. When we rushed Miss Kitty to the hospital she was so ill that her chances of surviving were next to zilch. For some .reason (still unknown), she had such severe anemia and massive infections that the average cat could never sur- vive. As { write this, Emily is sitting beside me, scowling at the racket from the typewriter. She looks a little funny — the fur is just beginning to grow back on her hips, neck, front leg and back thigh where she was shaved for various blood tests. She’s not quite back to her finest weight, but is working on it, and her coat is star- ting to shine again. More important, she’s ready to beat the living purr out of any of the other cats should they do anything at all to displease her. She’s back to keeping old Keno-cat’s ears clean and having regular games of ‘swat’ .with Timmy. Using the ~ installment plan, I should have her doctor bills paid off by November, and giving her her daily pills should get easier as time goes by and she learns to quit biting me. By air, getting to the parts of North and South Dakota and Nebraska that I visited is a pain in the tail and should be avoided. However, if you are planning a car trip to the Canadian prairies this summer, give a thought to sw- inging, south on one leg of the trip and have a look at some magnifi- cent scenery. First, the truth about the ‘*Badlands’’ and the ‘Black Hills’’. No story about the old West is complete without some reference to these fandmarks. If you're anything like me, you've pictured the Badlands as some sort of desert with al! the appeal of the back side of the moon. 1 assured that the Black Hills would be somewhat the same, with the charming addition of some rugged cliffs in various degrees of black — all ugly. And now, the truth. The Badlands are thousands of acres of magnificent canyons and rock formations. Due to the chemical content of the rock (many coal See Famous Page 30 ECT PROPERTY IMCLUDES1 104/22/20/26/36/52/64 PARIME.
