By KIM PEMBERTO Ne Reporter President of Universal Library Systems Jim Speight, who founded the business in Toronto 10 years ago, says it was moved to West Vancouver a short time later because this is where he prefers to live. “One of the things about the North Shore is it’s very quiet. We’re all high strung people...we can work hard then go for a walk in the perk, and I don’t have to fight the bridge.”’ The business computerizes library systems, and counts West Vancouver Memorial Library among its clients as well as the city and county of San Diego, Califor- nia. Speight says a computerized library system allows a library user to save time when searching for a particular book. The system pro- vides a code number to every book and every library member. Speight says one of the com- pany’s main strengths is its per- sonnel. ‘High technology businesses are interesting. They don’t necessarily have a large number of employees, but they do however have very highly experienced and intelligent people. Ken Strang, course instructor, points out, ‘‘Some of the uses one can make of dreams and their study include such things as personal problem solving of real world issues, increased understan- ding of one’s own inner nature, more insight into personal and business relationships, and enhanced emotional growth and spiritual development.”’ Further information about the course may be obtained from the Continuing Education Dept. of the North and West Vancouver School Districts at 985-8741 or 987-8141, or from the instructor Ken Strang at 683-2754, require have greater demands placed on them,’’ he says. He notes one demand is meeting the deadlines for submitting pro- posals to various libraries. Another is dealing with any breakdown the computer system may have. “| know when there’s a system down in North America. This whole place becomes electric. You have to have people who can look at the problem and solve it quick- ly,” he says. Speight says the company is continuing to expand, and he sees a bright future ahead. He says major libraries in Canada and the United States are switching to computers at a rate of about 100 a year, and there are over 3,000 libraries that Speight believes will become computerized..
