By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter Founded in 1954, the Safety Council continues to provide in- formation on all aspects of safety in the three local municipalities. Lawson says one of the main programs for the group is the Elmer Safety Elephant program, which teaches children in Kindergarten to Grade 1 general safety rules. He says other programs include mall displays every spring and fall, a Grade 4 bicycle program, an adult pedestrian program and the distribution of safety material. Lawson says if anyone wants in- formation on any aspect of safety, he is encouraged to contact a it safe member of the Safety Council. “We'd fike people to realize we're here to help,’’ he says. One new area that members are involved with is a pedestrian safety program, especially for seniors. Lawson said the group is look- ing for a local senior interested in carrying on that program. Another program is CounterAt- tack al Sutherland Senior Second- ary School. This program is to help new drivers learn safe driving skills and to raise awareness about the hazards of drinking and driv- ing. Members of the North Shore Safety Council meet once a month, and often hear from guest speakers. Some guest speakers from last year included a spokesman from Crimestoppers, who explained how the program was organized and its goals, and a local detective who told the group how citizens can help by calling police with tips.
