Race relations er. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is the undisputed king of easily digestible multiplex fare (Covote Ugly, Gone in 60 Seconds, Armaggedon), and Remember the Titans is no exception. The race issue is watered down, which may make the film unpalatable for those looking for an accu- rate account of the period. Granted, a more heavy-handed treatment by director Boaz Yakiin would have resulted in a film with a serious identity crisis: is it a rousing “let’s win one for the Gipper” football movie, or a gritty social studies lessor? Hollywood is never short of a football movie to ped- die to the American public. From the good (Any Given Sunday), to the bad ( Necessary Roughmess) and the dogey (Air Bud: Golden Receiver), thers are scores of pigskin . flicks lining video store shelves. Remember the Titans is above the average because of the integration theme, and ‘the fact that it is based on a true story, which always watered down accurate). The dialogue is trite at dmes and the events, if they didn’t have the “based on a true story” seal of approval, might seem like a bit of a stretch. ‘Denzel Washington dogs a good job in the somewhat limited role of Coach Boone. Ditto Will Patton as the ousted coach who must swallow his pride, along with his hopes of career advancement, ia what could have been a very one-dimensional role. ‘The movement of the narra- tive in relation to his character is a pleasant surprise. There are many memorable performances among the football team players too, notably Ryan Hurst and Wood Harris, who play Bertier and Jutius. And director Yakim (A Price Above Rubies) has crafted the film in such a way that there is a sustained level of action and suspense, even though the results follow a tried-and-true formula, and we can predict the outcome before the opening credits roll. A history lesson it’s not; but Remember the Titans is a rousing, feel-good entry into the crowded canon of foot- ball movies. ‘makes things more interesting (though not always more From “Page 15 @ F:fth Avenue Cinemas 2110 Burrerd at Sth, Vancouver (7734-87003 © Saving Grace (PG) —: 7:15, 9:20 ~ pan. plus Sat/Sun/Mon 145, 4 - p.m. and ‘Tue 4 p.m. : The Tao of Steve (FG) — 7:23, 230 pam, plus Sat/Sun/Mon . 2:15, 4:45 p.m. and Tue 4:45 p.m. Girl Fight (144) — 7:19, 9:40 p.m. plus Sat/Sun 2, 4:30 pm. tnd Tue 4:30 pmo Dancer In ‘The Dark (14A)—7 ‘ - 8, 9:50 p.m. plas Sat /Sun/Mon - 1:15, 4:10, 5 p.m. and Tuc 4:10, 5 p.m. (no 8 Pam. 5 show on Wed, et 11) -B Park Theatre 3440 Cambie at 18ih, Vancouver. : (876-2747) ‘The Exorcist (184) — 7. 35 ~ @ Koll wood Theatre ‘ 3125, Wert iaiiela Vancouve From Page 14 is foorbail night.
