Or are you curious about the scien- tific names of trees that grow along your block? A plant science student at the University of B.C. has the answer to these and many other horticultural queries. , Judy Newton, a mature stu- dent with 20 years of prac- tical gardening experience, is staffing the UBC Hortline this summer. The Hortline, a free service offered year-round to B.C. gardeners by the UBC Botanical Garden, answers questions about everything from garden pests to plant identification. The Hortline number is 228-5858. From September to April calls are recorded on a dictaphone and answered by mail. But during the summer months the provincial government’s Youth Employment Program pro- vides funding for students like Judy Newton to answer the telephone several hours a week. Newton says she takes calls continuously during the hours the Hortline is open (Monday rings as fast as I hang up,” she says. When the Hortline is not being answered, a pre- recorded tape gives callers tips on current gardening problems. Newton estimates she receives more than 100° calls a day. ‘‘There is ob- vidusly a great need for this sort of information,’’ says. Newton says gardening problems tend to be seasonal. ‘*Right now I’m getting a lot of calls about dogwood, Unique style of Japan — THERE IS a very special quality about all things Japanese.
