20 — Wednesday, April 29, 1598 — North Shore News north shore news EE <> BUSINESS The heart of investment SUSANNA Stuart has changed the way she advises her clients about money. T came across Stuart during a recent trip to New Zealand. Her comments on “your head, your heart and your money” are as relevant in Canada as they are halfivay around the world. “I got a phone call from one of my clients, asking me about property investment,” said Stuart, senior financial adviser with Coopers & Lybrand in Auckland. “I pointed out the outlook for property prices here is uacer- tain at best (as I gather it is in Canada). She said she knew that but felt more comfortable with property — something she can see’and touch —- than any other type of invesument. “She didn’t want advice about risk and returns — rather, she wanted support for her decision.” Stuart said a few years ago, she would have been less sup- ‘portive. These days, however, her thinking has shifted. - “Investment is not only ., about risks and returns. The . emotions, attitudes and com- fort level of the investor are part of the equation,” she said. _ Stuart knows managers. | who do an excellent job of running and planning for the . _ future of their companies. .“But in their personal lives, they are always broke by pay- day and may be doing litde _ about their own retirement.” _ She said many people can- “not bear to invest unless there’s an element of risk attached. : “They may be careful dri- vers and make careful buying decisions —- but they love a gamble. The important thing,” said Stuart, “is to rec- ognize your own money atti- tude and understand haw it influences vour saving, invest- ing and spending patterns. Then plan your finances accordingly. “Ifyou are an anxious sort, don’t get browbeaten into a high-nsk/high-return *oppor- tunity of a lifetime.’ You won’t be happy with it, you won’r sleep at night and you will probably pull out at precisely the wrong moment. “If money flows through - your fingers like sand, set up automatic transfers from your chequing account into a ‘can’t touch’ account or invest- ment.” Stuart said she feels the issuc of “money attitude” is particularly important for women. “I find many women have a lower risk tolerance than men and are less inclined to think about their long-term financial affairs.” ” — Copyright 1998 Mike Grenby Contact Mike Grenby at P.O.
