According t Autochassic’s Lisa Gulyas, a major shift in the
elassic car marker has occurred in the last few vears.

“When this auction started in 1991, British cars were the
ones that were in big demand.” she says. “Today, it’s
American muscle cars that everyone wants.”

Gulyas credits this shift to the aging baby boomer popula-
tion.

“They grew up with cars like Mustangs and Corvettes, and
now that they have the money to buy one they wane the car
they never had when they were young,” she explains.

As to the selling prices of these classics, like all collectibles
they vary from season to season,

At Autoclassic’s last auction, in the tall of 1998, the top
sellers were a 1962 Mercedes 19081. ($33,000), a 1979
Ferrari 308 ($29,750) and a 1964.5 Mustang convertible, A
1977 Alpha Komeoa GTV was the least expensive car to be
sold ($500) in the fall auction.

To get a better idea of what the vehicles at this wi eckend” 's
auction will go tor, Autoclassic’s Gulyas saves last spring ’s fig
ures are a better representation of the marker, because “spring
is when people start thinking about cars.” Ergo, increased
demand is increased price.

Top seller last spring was a 1999 Prowler. The purple
open-whee! Chrysler retro vehicle sold for $73,000. From
there, though, the prices came back to earth with the second
highest seller, a 1958 Mercedes Benz 2805L, bringing in
$28,250. At che other end of the spectrum, a 1979 Lancia
went for $700 at last spring’s No Reserve auction.

though I was watching a cut-
ting cdge, automotive-
flavoured news report which
[ could then cleanly steal for
this here weekly traffic dia-
tribe. But, as I said, it had no
point — so, what was there
to steal?

And I must have a point.
A lack of basic grammar
skills, T can live with that. A
westerly, affluent neighbour-
hood? Sorely lacking that,
too. But something vaguely
resembling a point! That’s
the very essence of this week-
ly drivel with which the
North Shore News desper-
ately fills space.

If I only had a point.
How un-American of me.

. Folks, should you be dri-
ving down the road one day
and suddenly find yourself
temporarily blinded by the
sun, don't go digging for
your cell phone so you can
call your lawyer so you can
lay a liability suit on
Chevrotet— just slow the
hell down. Lay curses on the
sun until you’re blue in the
face -— but slow down! Stop,
even!

Maybe pull down the
cleverly hidden “sun-visor”
that antomakers don’t want
you to know about. Maybe
put on a decent pair of polar-
ized sunglasses.

Aad for heaven's sake,
stop using shine-enhancing
juice on the dashboard.
