White hot looks for summer’s hazy days

BLAME IT on the hazy days of
summer, but those stylish black
and colorful clothes may suddenly
seem so heavy that they weigh you
down no matter how they’re
worn. During a mid-summer
swelter, the only color to wear is
white.

There are many moods to
white. It is stark, optical and
modern, yet nostalgic and femi-
nine. You may choose to wear
ladylike white or casual-as-
underwear white, sportive-stretchy
white or youthful-and-innocent
white. Pick one or mix them up
into a personal white.

Key to a white wardrobe that
can take the heat, and still be
worn into fall, is one without a lot
of details, and not too sparingly
cut. The items should be casily
coordinated to make several dif-
ferent outfits, and able to be mix-
ed with another color, such as
black, in the fall.

These white pieces should also
be reasonably priced, so do no
hesitate about spending on sum-
mer whites when stores are al-
ready stocking fall merchandise.

Here is a collected group of
white garments that you can wear

to completely cover up from head
to toe, or reveal as much as you
wish. These nine pieces can be
worn in a number of ways —
enough to wear every day of the
week,

— A crisp white shirt that buttons
up the front.

— An unlined white blazer, loose-
ly cut, which can have sleeves
rolled.

—A fitted, sleeveless,
styled white dress.

— White stirrup pants with
trouser detail at the waistband.

—~ White shorts, either bermuda
style, jeans shorts or cycling style.
—A white cotton sweater,
perhaps sleeveless.

— A cropped top or bra top in
white.

— A long white scarf in a sheer or

Volunteers will act as interpreters
for people who require assistance
during their appointments with
doctors, lawyers, educators and at
various other meetings.

ENTHUSIASTIC people who
enjoy sharing their time and ar-
tistic skills are invited to help
seniors create various crafts. The
hours are flexible on Wednesday
mornings.

ENERGETIC people are needed
to welcome newcomers to the
North Shore and help them to
improve their English. Volunteers
will help immigrants with their
language skills and help them
become acquainted with the

neighborhood shops, schools and

community services.

SOMEONE who is between 20
and 25 years of age is needed to
befriend a young woman who has
a mental handicap. Together pro-
jects could include going for
walks, watching movies, or par-
ticipating in social or recreational
activities.

ed. As a fresh way to protect hair
from the sun, wrap the scarf
around your head and secure it.

For weekend coolness, unbutton
the shirt to the waist and tie it in
front. Beneath wear the cotton
Jeggings and leather flats. Wear
the cropped top under the shirt,
worn unbuttoned over the cycling
shorts.

Wear the cycling shorts with the
stretchy cropped top and tie the
white scarf around your hips like

_a sarong. Or simply wear the cycl-

ing shorts with the sleeveless white
sweater and flats.

As the sun gets lower in the
sky, switch to the unlined jacket,
worn unbuttoned with the bra top
beneath, and add the stirrup
pants, which are still rolled at the
legs. Add your flats.

For evening, slip into the
sleeveless white dress and your
white shoes. For a more casual
evening, add the leggings or cycl-
ing shorts beneath your dress.

White is right for work, too.
Wear the stirrup pants, unrolled
at the cuffs, with the sleeveless
cotton sweater. Twist the long
scarf, and slip it through the belt
loops of the pants to add
dressiness.
