28 — Wednesday, January 22, 1992 - North Shore News Nerd Prince of Tides Nick Nolte’s performance key to Streisand’s bittersweet romance The Prince of Tides * x ¥2 (Columbia) Rated 14 years (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Oakridge, Coquitlam, Richport, Scott, Station Square and Clearbook cinemas) Tides isn’t a soap opera — it would have been the perfect title. [ T’S TOO bad Prince of Tim Bell ’ (FILM REVIEW Director/star Garbra Streisand doesn’t avoid the suds entirely in bringing Pat Conroy’s bestseller to the screen. But her work behind the camera is more impressive than in front. (Not that she’s bad, it’s just that the glamor and . Charisma that makes her a star dwarfs her attempts to play a pro- fession as “mundane” as psychiatry.) However, she’s not the focus of the story. Nick Nolte gets the meaty lead as Tom Wingo, an out-of-work teacher whose mar- riage is collapsing. Since his brother’s death, some-. . thing i is gnawing at him. He can’t pin it down, but whatever it is, it’s keeping Tom emotionally distant ‘from his family. . His twin sister, the successful New York poet, Savannah (Melia- da Dillon} is even more disturbed. Her latest suicide attempt has driven her psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein (Streisand), to enlist Tom's help in finding put what is causing Savannah io self-destruct. In the process, he learns his problems with his wife (Blythe Danner}, mother (Kate Nelligan) and father (Brad Sullivan) stem from his childhood. But they aren't the only ones suffering. Susan’s husband, a snobbish concert viclinist Jeroen Krabbe) is emotionally cruel and unfaithful. Her son (real-life son Jason Gould in an impressive debut) is the usual teen with an at- titude. Well, you can see it’s an ocean of persona! angst out there, and Tom is the Prince of Tides. (I think that's the point of the title, al- though these literary allusions re- main more than a little vague.) Primarily though, this is a slick and sentimental love story be- tween Streisand and gravel-toned Nolte who offers one of his best performances as her temperamen- tal opposite. He gets the best com- ic zingers and has a funny running gag trying to find a place to puff in a non-smoking environment. Prince of Tides isn’t a snake pit of despair — it’s a romance; bit- tersweet and pure Hollywood. Aliens *& + * % (CBS/Fox Laser- disc) Rated R “may be synthetic,” said the andraid, ‘‘but i’m not stupid.” And neither is the rest of the cast in this deluxe laserdisc version of James Cameron’s hypercharged sci-fi action hit. The 17 extra minutes clarifies -the plot and adds details to Sigourney Weaver's character, Ripley. In addition to the razor- sharp letter-boxed image, there's a side of supplemental material that takes the project from tentative outline through the filming to this restoration. I's a package guaranteed to thrill the film’s legion of fans.
