Kirsten Barnes raising funds to join nat’l Olympic team KIRSTEN BARNES is at- tempting to row herself to Barcelona, Spain. By Surj Rattan News Reporter The West Vancouver resident won two gold medals in the 199i World Rowing Championships held in Vienna. She is part of the Canadian Women’s Rowing team and is now looking forward to joining the Canadian Olympic team at the Olympics in Barceiona. But Barnes needs mere than mere physical ability to compete in the Olympics. She needs money. -That’s where the West Van- couver Foundation has lent its support. It has given Barnes, through the Canadian Rowing team, $6,000 to help pay some of the bills she will encounter while she competes in Spain. - *“It’s assistance for my trans- portation and my living expenses. The (federal) government funding is minimal sc this really helps,’’ says Barnes. ‘It takes a lot of stress off of us.”’ Jim Cameron is the chairman of the West Vancouver Foundation. It is a- non-profit, non-political organization. “It’s a’community founda- tion,’? says Cameron. ‘‘We rely | - on our donations coming from the community as opposed to cor- porations, although we do get some contributions from corpora- tions."” Financial contributions are placed in an endowment fund. In- terest from the money is distributed each year within the areas of culture, science, medicine and education in West Vancouver. But not just anyone can receive money from the Wes: Vancouver Foundation. © “When people make a request to us for funding we first of all determine if it (the organization) falls within the four categories mentioned. Then we determine if the organization is responsible and if they need it (funding),”* says Cameron. Following that, the foundation’s grants committee will make a rec- ommendation to its board of directors regarding the allocation of funds. Cameron says the West Van- couver Foundation receives about 25 requests per year for funding. The foundation was started by former West Vancouver mayor Derrick Humphreys in 1979 and the first donations to the founda- tion totalled $21,700. Today the foundation’s funds total $42,000 and Cameron says that by the end of 1992 the foundation hopes to raise $1 maillion. “I'm pretty optimistic that we can achieve that goal because the people on the foundation are very capable,’’ says Cameron.
