Capilano College ex- tension programs will be taking a tour group down to Mexico to observe the rare configuration of heavenly bodies. The eclipse will be the longest dura- tion eclipse that anyone will be able to see for 142 years. It is one of a series (Saros Cycle 4136) that began June 14, 1360. Capilano College astronomy in- structor Bill Van Luven will be joined by UBC geophysics and astronomy curator David Vogt in leading the eclipse tour, which will be based at Club Med, Sonora Bay, Mexico. This Saturday, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room GI19, the tour leaders will present a free lecture on the ‘‘show of the century.”’ The path of totality, where you have to be to see the total eclipse, cuns from Wawaii, through the southern Pacific Ocean and skirts the scuthern tip of the Baja peninsula. “Everybody is going to the area of the path of totality. The whole area has been booked for years. The scientific community has been waiting for this one for decades. And every nut in a camper is heading down to Baja Califor- nia,”’ he said. The July 11 total solar ectipse will last about seven iminutes. Observers in the path of totality will find ix dark enough to see the stars and the bright planets in the “sky.
