This kind of soiling cannot be removed by a vacuum cleaner and u will need cleaning by one of the following home cleaning methods lo restore its appearance. The sur- face of the carpet can be brightened seasonally but thorough deptit cleaning should be done as needed. Whichever method you use, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions very careiully. NOTE: Some cleaning products leave a sticky residue on the carpet fibres that causes the carpet to soii faster after cleaning. A good way to check the cleaning product is to put some in a dish and leave it for a few days to evaporate. If it sticks to the disn, it will stick to ycur carpet and hold the dirt and soil particles. A shampoo machine is required for the best possible results in thorough depth cleaning, ft is ad- visable to remove furniture from the room when using this method of cleaning. If it is impractical to remove the furniture, put thick plastic film ounder the less of chairs, tables and other furniture until the carpet is dry, This will Prevent rust or other stains. Avoid the use of soap, ammo- nia, bleach o: any of the strong household cleaning agents intend- ed for use on hard surfaces, such as woodwork, linoleum or tile. Select one of the mild neutral detergents which are sold specifically for carpet cleaning and follow the manufacturers’ direc- tions for diluting and application. Test the solution for stickiness. Hot water extraction cleaning is a process that injects the pile with hot water and deiergent solution under pressure. The soil is suspended in the flood of water and extracted by a high suction wet vacuum system. In addition to soil removal, hot water extraction is very effective in removing es. cess detergent residue which can build up in a carpet after a heavy wet shampooing. (f vou decide to rent hor water extraction cleaning equipment to clean osvour carpets yourself, use only those machines that use hor water from the tap and have a high suction power. Ask for a machine that will) leave your carpeting practically dry in’ fess than half a day. A good practice is to pull the machine once slowly over the en lire carpet und a second time over heavy traffic areas using water in- jection) and vacuum = recovery. Then turn off the water injection and pull the machine slowly over the areas covered twice using vacuum only. The high vacuum suction will remove much of the excess water and leave the carpet only slightly damp. This should avoid over-wetting and risk of browning, shrinking or streaking. NOTE: do not overwet your carpet. CANADIAN CLOSET N. le you want... SEAS Cash & Carry INSTALLATION AVAILABLE 1385 Crown 5t. Van. 986-4263 Don't use this kind of cleaner. If it dries to a powder, which can be vacuumed out, it will not cause faster re-soiling and you can use it on your carpeting. There are a number of powder- type cleaners generally available for surface brightening of carpet in the home. These consist of - solvent-saturated and detergent- saturated inert powdered material. Generally, the method calls for thorough vacuuming of the carpet, sprinkling the powder lib- erally over the area to be cleaned, brushing it into the carpet, then vacuuming thoroughly again. Although this method may not clean the carpet quite as thoroughly as the wet method, it does have the advantage of less distortion of texture, good tremuval of greasy soil, no color bleeding and less drying time, thus making the room available sooner for re-use. Spray the foam on the carpet, sponge in with sponge mop and then vacuum dry. There is a cer- tain danger that a streaky appear- ance will result when this method is applied without proper care or if it is used to clean a heavily soil- ed carpet. Test the spray for stick- iness as described in the cau- tionary note above.
