Fire drills in homes vital to save lives HUNDREDS OF Canadians die needlessly in house fires every year. Needlessly, because they had not planned an escape route until it was too late. Fire drills in schools are a famil- iar event, but sadly not in homes where the majority of fires occur. The District of North Vancouver Fire Department urges all families to “Plan to Get Out Alive’? by designing an escape route before fire starts. To start, draw a floor plan of your complete home showing all possible exits. Devise two ways out of every room, especially bedrooms. If one escape route is a window on the second floor or higher, invent a safety ladder. If you live in a highrise, know and practise two ways out of the build- ing. If you cannot escape out of your apartment, seal the door out to the hallway with duct tape, damp towels or bedding to help keep the smoke out. When practising escape plans, teach household members 19 close doors behind them as they leave. When a smoke alarm sounds, roll out of bed and onto the floor. Do not stand up or stop for clothes, papers or jewelry. Crawl (the lower the better as cleaner air is nearer to the ground) to the door, and if it isn’t warm-hot, open it carefully while checking for heat and smoke. Even if the door is cool, there still might be danger lurking on the other side. If it’s safe, continue crawling away from the smoke. If the door is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT. Escape out a window or secondary exit. Meet at a pre-ar- ranged meeting place (lamppost, swing set, tree, etc.) away from the building. Fa CANADIAN C Fireplace could explode CONSUMER AND Corporate Af- fairs Canada recently warned con- sumers to stop using direct-vent natural gas and propane fireplaces because of the danger of explo- sion. Three persons. have been reported injured in Ontario since the fireplaces were introduced two years ago. The majority of sales have taken place in Ontario and British Columbia. The warning applies to fireplaces that exhaust directly through the wall behind the unit and that have a sealed glass front panel that can- not be opened. Under certain conditions, the burner flame may die, resulting in an accumulation of gas inside the unit. Attempts to reignite the flame may cause an explosion, shattering the front glass and sen- ding particles into the room. The Canadian Gas Association has rescinded certification of all brands of gas fireplaces. Sales of new units have been suspended un- til necessary safety modifications have been made.
