LIFESTYLES Learn about floating home lifestyle THE FLOATING Home Lifestyle Course is being offered once again by the Vancouver School Board’s Continuing Education Division. This course, which was sold out last semester, is designed as an in- troduction to the increasingly popular way of life here in the Lower Mainland. The course is held in two sessions at Point Grey Secondary School, 5350 East Boulevard, in Vancouver. The first session is on Tuesday, April 20 from 7 until £0 p.m., and the seco:-d session is on Monday, April 17 num 7 until 10 p.m. Floating homes are becoming more and more acceptable to gov- ernment here in the Lower Mainland and across the country. Recent changes to Canada Mor- tgage and Housing Corporation legislation provides a big boost for floating home enthusiasts right across the country. This legislation provides for mortgage insurance which will pave the way for more banks to provide mortgage monies, making floating homes more af- fordable. in recent years banks have become more friendly towards lending monies on floating homes, as the lifestyle has gained govern- mental acceptance. This new de- velopment by the Canada Mor- tgage and Housing Corporation will make floating homes more af- fordable by lowering the amount of down payment required. According to one expert, Michael Goodman, who has put together the course, it is still possible to get a good floating home for $120,500 to $150,000, with a 25 per cent down payment. According to Goodman, people think it’s less expensive, and to some extent it is, if you rent moorage. However, strata lots in Ladner are selling for as much as $200,000, while rental moorage can vary from $500 to $600 per month, when you can find it. “It’s really a lifesty;e decision,” says Goodman, ‘*and not a cheap housing solution. However, it may be a good time to buy, because ac- cording to what has happened in other cities, legalization and gov- ernment recognition have brought a dramatic increase in the value of floating homes. Floating homes are just beginning to gain widespread popularity in Van- couver.”” The information Goodman has put together for the course wasn't easy to come by. As someone who was sold on the lifestyle in the ear- ly 1970s, after living on a float home for eight years, he decided to build a legal waterfront communi- ty. ‘That is where I made my first mistake,”’ said Goodman. **Get- Program will discuss the fate of heritage buildings VANCOUVER COMMUNITY College at City Centre Campus is offering the Conservation of Heritage Buildings courses this spring.
