Don’t fret over late

income tax filing

WHEN IT comes to income
tax, deadlines mean dollars.
Anyone who files an income tax
return is familiar with the April 30
deadline. But what happens if you
miss this deadline? What do you
do if the T4 slip from your
employer doesn’t show up?

As far as Revenue Canada is
concerned, the date stamped across
your income tax return envelope
by Canada Post is the date this
correspondence was received. So
don’t worry about being penalized
if things get held up in the mail.

Feb. 28 was the official date that
all T4s and TSs had to have been
mailed out to employees and inter-
est earners.

If you still haven’t received a T4
slip from your employer, and
aren’t having any luck in your at-
tempts to obtain one, Revenue
Canada will accept an estimate of
your gross income, CPP, UI,
union dues and income tax paid.

Together with this estimate, be
sure to send photocopies of all rel-
evant pay stubs, and also include
the name and address of your
employer.

COMPLAIN

Vf you've lost all your pay stubs
and your employer refuses to cco-
perate, it is possible to file an
“employee complaint form”’ if you
still can’t get your T4 slip.

This complaint form can also be
used if your employer refuses to
correct an error on your T4 slip.

Once a complaint has been filed,
Revenue Canada may do a payroll
audit of the offending employer to
determine the correct figures for
your income tax return.

If you miss the April 30
deadline, Revenue Canada _ will
charge a penalty of five per cent of
the tax you owe, plus an additional
