He travel C9 - Sunday, June 3, 1984 - North Shore News TO The Club Med addiction AVE YOU ever wondered about vacation- ing at one of the popular resorts such as Club Med? I’ve got to admit that the idea has never crossed my mind — the thought of scor- ching my hide all day playing volleyball on the beach and then boogieing all night in a disco just isn’t my line of work. But, the populanty of Club Med is a fact of life and when I received an invitation to at- tend a reunion dinner for GMs (the Club abbreviation for Gentle Members) I had to go and see what was going on. At first | felt as out of place as a pork chop at a vegetarian dinner — hun- dreds of attractive young adults (and a few older peo- ple) were lined up to get in — at $12 a head. Most of the guests were in groups of the same sex but there were a number of singles — quickly caught up in groups excitedly sharing their vacation memories. Four young girls quickly adopted Mom, here, and | got an insider’s view of the Club Med expernence. They’d all had the time of their lives — om every occasion. These kids were repeaters — they'd become so addicted to the Club’s style of vacation that they concentrated a whole year’s work and penny pin- ching for their annual escape. It didn’t seem to matter what Club Med spot they chose — they were enthusiastic about all of them. One girl was ac- tually holding down two jobs so that she could afford a double holiday — two Club Meds! The dinner remarkable an enormous buffet featuring a whole roast pig. The girls assured me that the food at the vanious Clubs was just as good -— you'd need those daily volicyball sessions. - As for me, I still don’t think I’m up to becoming a GM but my daughters would probably love it. I'd only hope that they didn’t make it a way of life — there’s more to travel than seeing the world from inside Club Med eo 6 @ DEAR BARBARA: A months ago, my sister and her husband and ! started making plans to vasat Furope this fall, including a lovely crutse on the Mediterranean I'm a widow and we're all in was quite few Luxury Cruise to the Seattle Hilton from only $299 Per Petson Sharing ALL tochusive 25 7K[BA Aboard the ultra etejar: ‘wt Nieuw Armsterdan: tre bocbes 1} atgtede view . ote. | AG thtttes 8 abi: 2 ntfs at Seatth | th.» ott) Avetnee theatre th hat cada em et oe - Swett baa retin OV a emer Yall enecsmtent! ty ona atoll SPACE LIMITER STEELES TRAWEL ht W North Verve Ouver: 987-2214 t sspolatierde a se] travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie our late 60s. Sister shot me a look like ‘‘What can I do?’’ and I mumbled something about having to think about the idea and changed the sub- ject. Today, Hilda phoned me all excited about going along. I told her I was in a rush and couldn’t talk to her but would call in a day or so. My sister ts all upset — she doesn’t want to hurt Hilda. I’m furious — if Hilda comes along I stay home. My sister’s husband says he doesn’t give a damn one way or the other. What would you do, Barb? ANSWER: Be furious, 1 guess! For one thing, there's no way I'd travel with so- meone | couldn’t stand. But, I’m sure I wouldn’t give up a wonderful vacation because of one of the Hildas of the world. That leaves the only answer: Hilda stays home. it seems to me that Hilda has her share of gall in mak- ing the suggestion in the first place. Shouldn’t people wait to be invited? Or at least have the decency to speak to her good friend, your sister, privately. You'd better have a long talk with your sister nght away. Suggest that she call Hilda and, using any excuse she can, put her off. Some that come to mind are, ‘‘Bet- ty is awfully difficult to travel with — we’re used to her but she’d drive you nuts.”’ or: **The cost will be tremendous — Betty won't share so you'll have to pay in single sup- Trip ofa B days Arstare AB? 1204 1079 1Q0e Monitor of hE Piyewterd! The problem might solve itself if the flights or cruise etc. are fully booked — no room in the inn for Hilda. Of course, your refusal to share will make you the villain anyway so why not be blunt — — ‘‘Sorry — we've made our plans’’ won’t make it any worse. DEAR BARBARA: I've just accepted a new job that will entail a number of long business trips by myself. I’ve never stayed alone in a hotel room and I’m quite nervous. I'd appreciate some advice — I know you’ve travelled by yourself and it doesn’t seem to bother you. ANSWER: Visit your local shop or electronics place and pick up a combination burglar and fire alarm. Mine fits in a crack of the door and shrieks if the door is opened.
