Cook was the sole member of the three majoz federal political parties to break rank and turn thumbs down on the referendum question. As Tory, Liberal and NDP MPs consecutively stood to say ‘‘yes’’ in the House, Cook shook his head to say ‘‘no’’ and remained seated Cook was unavailable for comment to press time Friday. But in an earlier News interview Cook said he didn’t care if he was criticized by the Mulroney gov- ernment for not toeing the party line. He said that he would have supported the national referendum only if his North Vancouver riding constituents backed the move. Said Cook earlier this month, “Pm not particularly in favor of it. I think the Senate is an ab- solute joke. I’ve always believed I've represented people in this riding. We got sold out on the Senate.” Meanwhile, MPs cast 233 ‘tyes’’ votes and 12 ‘‘no’’ votes on the constitutional referendum ques- tion. The bulk of the ‘‘no’’ votes were cast by Bloc Quebecois MPs.
