A8 - Wednesday, May 4, 1983 - North Shore News na mailbox i NDP raising false job hopes Dear Editor: I would like to respond to correspondent Morrison's blanket asssumption that only the NDP is “truly concerned about the shattered dreams of a whole stratum of society”. It is implied that no other party or group in society has such virtuous concerns as_ the "NDP. Morrison and others of his persuasion should think again. The recendy announced budget of the Government of Canada has received over- whelming approval and support from large and small business people in Canada as being a good way to go for creating permanent long- term jobs. Jobs created immediately, which is ap- parently what Morrison says the NEY will do, are almost bound to be short term jobs of a transitory nature. Perhaps he should make up his mind as to whether he thinks the NDP’s apparent deep concern for the unemployed is being properly carried through by the raising of false hopes of immediate job creation. Your papers heading Unemployed Punished (Ap. 20, 1983) could be applied equally to NDP promises of quick job creation under their administration. Another question, too, which Morrison might ask himself or Kempo, is where would the money come from immediately for these quick- fix job creating schemes. H.G. McConnell North Vancouver Self-interest ousts compassion Dear Editor: Britsh Columbians have a major choice: self interest and insensitivity, or equity and compassion. The Social Credit Party pretends to care, yet they have had us pay for fancy wines and first class air tickets, but tell us we cannot afford assistance to renters and the poor. Two examples suffice: B.C. probably had Canada’s best legal aid plan. Now we definitely have Canada’s most impoverished plan, even after it cut 20% of positions, cut coverage and reduced remuneration. Conservative governments ta Alberta and Ontario have substantially increased support of their legal aid plans and no cuts have been made. The Socreds claim B.C. measures are uniformly applied in the name of “restrain(”. Where then are comparable cuts in prosecutions, police, courts or pnsons? In B.C , the poor bear the burden. BCRIC was originally imtended to boost B.C.’s economy, creating jobs. The Socreds claim private ownership is always better. Today a few are richer from dabbling with BCRIC while many are poorer. The Socreds are stuck claiming credit for recent job creative initiatives (without BCRIC) which have no demonstrated ability to improve our economy. Socred appeals to in- dividual self-interest (over humanity) are made through promises of affluence we know they cannot keep. They have already had seven years but they pretend they will only deliver if re- elected The North Shore will not become a better place to live as Socred polucians preside over swelling UIC rolls and prisons elsewhere LD) Susan Ackland, MI) North Vancouver CUPE ‘horse’ ad dismays her Dear kditor It is with much dismay that T viewed the politcal message sponsored by CUPE Lox 1004 presented on local tcle vision This) message shows a man and a horse The gentleman discusses the premier's supposed political policies tn an insulting tone then suggests that ww docsn ¢ really matter, “T deal with that stuff every day” as he tosses a pitchfork full of horse manure to one side Poltical campaigns arc all too offen mud slinging events but to be “slinging” home dung ts simply one large step too far Phas type of inference should mot be pard fer by supposedly responsible and socially COMSC TOUS parties HP CUIPE will pay god moncy to produce this sort of teash then tt and the party vl cndorses can Most assuredly NOT rely on omy support gow oor at aay time inthe future Tm all foo Me Bennett at feast has campoigo isnt this dirty! It would be so easy tor me to make a big promise regarding the road to Whistler, Pemberton and eventually the North and say, “Sure — Ill build you a new road!” I won't make that promise until May 5. I'll spend a great deal of time within the first 120 days with the experts studying the situation and find the best way to resolve my two main concerns: First that It's safe; secondly that it has adequate capacity. John Reynolds is the man of action —he’s the man who gets things done.
