And police are saying that much of the credit is due to public awareness of the hazards posed by combining drink and driving. _As well as there being fewer impaired drivers on the road, there are also more -_people bothering to stop and call police when they see someone driving erratically. The situation began to turn around noticeably prior to Christmas, at which timne an increase in an- nouncements on the province’s drinking-driving Counter Attack program kept the problem high profile. However, RCMP in North Van note that the trend has been maintained since then and hope it will continue. PUBLIC CALLS Thursday this week sees a public meeting of the Counter Attack program in North Van to keep the matter under public at- tention. In November there were 33 calls received from North. Vancouver residents, although the RCMP still apprehended 57 people on impaired driving charges — just two less than for the same month in 1979. However, December saw a marked reduction in the number of impaired charges — 36, while there were 69 in the same month the previous year. At the same time, calls from the public concerning impaired drivers continued, with 32 being made over the month. The trend continued in. January, with 34 calls being — received, while there were 44 arrests — 10 less than during January 1980. Now the RCMP hope the situation will be maintained throughout the year and a spokesman comments: “Although there are a number of factors involved, when dealing with the statistics, I feel that the citizens of North Vancouver are to be congratulated on their support of the Counter Attack program. _ “It is hoped members of the community will continue to call their local police department when they observe a _ suspected im- paired driver.” The ‘program will be explained in full at tomorrow's public meeting, which will include a. slide presentation by Patricia Manduca, information officer for the ‘Counter Attack Program.
