sport B2 -Sunday News, September 21, 1980 Capilanos come up empty Cork shows the way Rugby can be played By LAIN SELLARS How does one describe a rugby match where the score was 30-0, without conjuring up images of the “Little Big Horn”? But that’s what happened when the Capilano Rugby Club lost to Cork Constitution Rugby Football Club from _ Ireland, last Saturday at Kinsmen Stadium. The Caps came out flat at the opening whistle and showed no spark of life in the first half, which they spent bottled up in their own end fending off constant attacks of the Constitution side. With a score or 20-0 for the visitors, the teams changed ends. It was a new and more determined Cap The sun shone brightly for the second last International Conference of Sports Car Clud’s race held at West- wood this past weekend, an unexpected treat that brought out the best in the local Canadian drivers. North Vancouver's Marty Knoll, in his MINIT TUNE / CLEANCO WESTERN / NORTH SHORE NEWS sponsored Formula Vee cer- tainly followed that trend in his race on Sunday. Starting fifth on a closely side that started the second half. They batttled the Cork team to a standstill, denying the visitors their line. The Capilanos had their own offense, coming up short of the opposing line time and time again. With the end of the match in sight and the inevitable assured, came the lag and the visitors broke through to score two more tries. The final whistle went with the score 30-0 in favour of the Lrish. One play describes the essence of what transpired on Saturday when these two rugby teams met on the field. Cork was awarded a penalty in the Capilano half and elected to run the ball. matched grid of twelve cars Knoll was the victim of a first-lap mishap with one of the leading cars that quickly knocked him back to last place. Throwing caution to the wind, Knoll fought his way up to fifth place again where he fell into a duel with Bill McDougall of Seattle. For the rest of the race the two fought back and forth swapping positions con- stantly on every lap. They finished side-by-side at the flag, with McDougall just edging Knoll out. Want to curl? As this was being put into effect the Cork backs shifted over to the short side of the field. Cork, still in possession of the ball in the ensuing maul, had the ball out to them and they made a swift attack on the line. If not for the stalwart tackling of Caps’ winger Phil LeBlond and fullback Al Kirk, they would have been successful in their en- deavour. This 45 second play showed clearly the dif- ference in levels of rugby skills practised by these two opposing teams: the crash of the wing forward and the swift unit movement of the forward pack to support him, acting as one. The backs shifting to the short side, leaving open the wide side of the field to the op- posing backs, a move which could only be made under the complete assurance of their retaining possession of the ball by their forwards. The Capilanos lost to a team with superior rugby skills. A team, who technically could play better rugby than their Canadian counterparts. A team, who deal of also had a great pride.
