I phoned Jack just before six o’clock: “you can come down for him, he is going to be all right, though he'll look pretty grim for a day or two. I am going to send. some tablets home with you: to give him in the next few. meals.” A little later he was at the office telling me the sequel. “You know, Doc, when I got back home the yard was full of people who came over to — see the dead snake...and— then Stan Miles, our neighbor and a noted joker’ — arrived and asked, ‘Did you get the other one... you know they always travel in pairs.’ I. never saw people disappear so fast.” QUESTION: We seem to. have fleas in the pets every year and I suspect the grounds harbor them. Is there anything we can do to cut down the number? ANSWER: In addition to the various insecticides and . repellants that are put on the animal, an attempt should be ~ made to kill those inhabiting any parts of the house, basement or yard. The eggs and pupa are resistant to sprays. The, larvae and nymphs (different ‘stages in the _ flea’s development) are suscep- tible to a reasonably inex- pensive Chlordane solution, made up in water at a 2% strength and sprayed over the lawn, in the woodshed, on the welcome mats, front and back, in all nooks and ‘crannies of the basement and downstairs storeroom where the dogs sleep on hot summer nigats. This can be obtained from any agricultural store or garden supply. It is safe to use on dogs in a .5% solution but is toxic to cats so see that the latter don't tome into ‘contact with it’ ‘when it is freshly sprayed. Fleas are becoming more resistant to insecticides all the time and new products are being developed. The latest is called Fenthion and is reported to be effective against almost all external parasites including mange mites with little toxicity to the animal. QUESTION: Our lawn develops brown areas especially at this time of the year which I suspect is caused by dogs urinating on it. What can we do? ANSWER: This is probably the cause...usually females who squat rather than males who seck an upright post, bush or tree. Rainfall is minimal and lawns are not being watered much yet so the high nitrogen “burns” the young new shoots of grass. Sprinkling will dilute it and prevent the unsightly appearance. Various repellants are recommended by the garden stores but the most effective 1 know is a Jour-foot high fence.
