Doug Penner has been active in the community newspaper in- dustry for the past 22 years, and said he can appreciate that busy schedules and deadlines are an obstacle to spreading the news about the vital role community newspapers play locally and across the country. “We are the oldest media in Canada. Our roots precede Con- federation. We were there in the personages of Joseph Howe and William Lyon MacKenzie. “They and other community newspaper publishers played a vital role in shaping individual rights and government for and by the people. That role has not changed,”’ said Penner. He added that he_ believes publishers are too modest and because of that ‘‘we leave it to the other media to tell our story."’ “Can you imagine our advertis- ers relying on their competition to get the message out about the ef- fectiveness of their products and services?”’ Penner said he is encouraged by the marketing direction the CCNA and its regional association members have taken since the in- ception of the first navional mar- keting program in 1990. Exhibition annual provin- cial fair, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 7. The display, which can be seen at the Ukrainian Showcase Pavil- ion daily throughout the 18-day fair, brings history alive and tclls such stories as the armed struggle of. the Ukrainian Cossacks to establish an independent siate. The collection, which for the first time is out of Ukraine, in- cludes artifcats used by Cossacks and rebel participants of the fierce battle of Berestechko.
