ALL IS well above and below the streets of Ambleside. [ES Contributing Writer Obvious to any viewer is the fresh new look that West Vancouver’s core commercial district has taken on, with new pavement, sidewalks, lighting and land- scaping. Less apparent is the change that has occurred beneath Marine Dr., which is now level and on solid foundation. Water and sewer lines, exposed to the light of day for the first time since the 1920s, have had a thorough overhaul, and have been covered over again and left to continue their usefulness. Phase I of the $3.2 million Ambleside Revitalization project has been completed. One of the most ambitious such projects ever at- tempted, the Ambleside’s shiny new look was design- ed by landscape architect Don Vaughan, with plenty of input from local merchants and residents. Bill Irwin of the Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers, spearheaded enthusiasm for the plan, which engendered overwhelming support from area business people. Although the weeks of construction and upheaval caused a great deal of inconvenience to the merchants and their patrons, it was well worth the wait. The six-foot-wide concrete sidewalks with red brick bands on the side combine walking comfort along with an updated look that is visible from the street. Thanks to a $50,000 donation from a local woman, new turquoise ‘“‘Candi” lights are illuminating the five-block area. New trees have been planted at the corners, leaving the mid-block sections open to view. The project will also provide benches for shoppers te stop for a rest or a chat, and new bus shelters which will feature Village Directory signs advertising all the local amenities. The new Ambleside has more of a connection now with the waterfront, provided in particular by em- phasis on 14th Si. Landscaped and fitted with in- terlocking brick pavers, 14th St. takes people down to a public square at the beach, where a new fountain, pier and boat launch are among the features. The old ferry building, soon to be renovated and restored for heritage and artistic displays, is an inter- esting attraction at the foot of 14th. The repaving and curbing of 18t St. came in response to community concerns about the road, which leads to another one of West Vancouver’s oldest buildings, The Legion. The cost of the project is being shared between the merchants and the municipality on a 75/25 per cent basis. The provincial government has agreed to make a $1.2 million contribution te the entire project, $568,000 being drawn from the lottery fund this year to go toward Phase I. The plan is to begin Phase I! next year, hopefully with underground installation of Hydro, B.C. Tele- phone and television cable. The remaining cross streets will be repaved with in- terlocking pavers and four-headed carriage lights will draw attention to the 13th and 19th St. entrances to the area. Bellevue Avenue will get a major overhaul and pavers will be laid in the laneways and on Clyde Avenue, where a particular pedestrian flavor will be encouraged.
