camps teach friendly turns Deana Lancaster News Reporter dlancaster@usnews.com LEARNING to snowboard can be hard on your knees and butt, jarring to your spine, and most painful of all ... very injurious to your ego. Thar’s why it’s important to learn the basics -— or if vou already ride, to learn new skills — with the assistance of people you like and aren’t afraid to look a little silly around. It’s hard not to like Jennifer Kainnie and Mary-Jane Mehlenbacher. The pair, close friends who look like sisters and have similarly loud and infectious laughs, have been bu i ter organizing women’s snowbaarding camps around §.C. Mehlenbacher says she linked her first turns on a board six years ago atan ARC women’s snowboarding camp partly onga- nized and coached by Rainnic. “It’s a much sater way to earn then trying to figure it out yourself,” she says, She believes in it so much that when Rainnie decided to revive the camps — this dime with the sponsorship of her employer Roxy/Quicksilver, a maker of surf, snow and activewear — Mehlenbacher jumped to help out. “I'm helping organize the out of town camps, 1 process chet bookings. And !'ni the social organizer.” As well as aprés-events organized by Mehlenbacher, the two-day camps offer personalized instruction from some of Whistler- Blackcomb’s best female coach- es.“We tend to keep the groups really small so there’s 2 reatly low instructor-participant ratio,” says Rainnie. Whether you are 3 beginner, or more advanced and fooking to try the terrain park, half pipe or learn co race in boarder cross, the camp offers lots of personalized coaching. ‘The pair say the average age of participants in the first three camps was around 30, but ranged from those in their early 20s to one woman, a grandmother at 55. “The best thing about it is really the atmosphere,” says Rainnie. “Everyone there is so supportive and kind of cheers you on when you try things. It’s amazing to see it.” The next camp runs this weekend, March 11 and 12, in Big White. On March 18 and 19, another takes place in Whistler- Blackcomb; April 8 and 9, Apex will play host; and April 22 and 23 another camp takes place at Whistler- Blackcomb. Being lost is not dangerous if you are prepared. Help wiil come. People who continue to travel after becoming lost usually get further from the trail and further from people who are looking for them. Do not go downhill. On the North Shore, going, downhill, or following the fail-line, often leads to natural drainages. These drainages have the common features of very thick bush, expansive cliffs, and waterfalls. Go to «www.northshorerescue.com> for more information.
