TWO popular writers pubtish their tenth nov- cs and both opt to step away from long stand- ing characters, to try new approaches. One has more siccess than the other. B When the Wind Blows by James Patterson (Lite, Brown and Company, New York, 416 pages, $30.00) After writing a string of well-received thrillers, includ- ing last years novel turned to movig, Kiss the Girls, James Patrerson has changed direc: von with his newest release, When tie Wind Blows A rogue FBI agent is fol- towing a case he’s been instructed to leave alone. A young girl is in the woods alone, having escaped from “the School.” A beautiful widow struggles for a reason to carry on. And the are all ona collision course. Along the way they'll have to deal with killers, strange genetic experiments, global conspiracy and the paranoid’s biggest question — who do you trust? It sounds like the making for another outstanding book trom this gifted writer and it does deliver on some levels, but overall Patterson is ventur- ing into a genre better han died by Dean Koontz. His story quickly becomes a fantas- tic tale, asking for an enor- mous leap of faith front the reader. Patterson Keeps the story moving along ata brisk pace towards its predictable out come, And then wraps up the ending while leaving many questions unanswered. The biggest one being when will he bring back Alex Cross, the hero of his previous works. Hi Body Lanyitage by James Hall (St. Martins Press, 336 pages, $30) Sitting in the dark, his leg broken, the stolen money missing, Stan Rafterty came to a conclusion that “a cold beer and a loade-? gun are the only compan‘crship any real man needed.” In James Hall's tenth novel, Body Language, he digs down into one family’s tragedy, peeling back layers of pain that kept a woman hostage to the past. An eleven vear old girl is raped, and her revenge sets off'a series of events that ripple through her lite until she is forced to face her history. Fans of Hall's previous works and his long time main character, Thorn, will find Body Language a change of pace. He introduces us to a new character, Alexandra Rafterny, police photographer, a woman who's nights are a steady diet of the results of murder and assaults. Her days are full of struggles to save her marriage and care tor dre father she loves but who remembers less cach day, While Alex is drawn to an unsolved string of rape-mur- ders, her husband is starting his own lite of came which derails both their lives and allows 2 cast of bizarre charae- ters to enter in. This book brings Hall clos- er to the mainstream of thriller writing but lets him bring along the quirkiness of his South Florida that have been the trademark of his previous works. — Terry Peters Top 10 in fiction 1 Tare Road by Maeve Binchy.
