Simple slip dress design
suitable for summer sun

READERS of this column
come in all shapes, sizes and
ages.

This was a design sent to me by 14-
year-old Carmel Amirteiz of West
Vancouver secondary

school. This simple
design can be made for

fun and casual dav wear

or for dramatic and ele-
gant evening wear, sim-
ply by changing the
fabric from corron to
silk.
Every clothing
design is based on five
basic picces called mias-
ter pieces. They can be custom dratted
and fitted or purchased from any of the
major pattern, companies.

- Modifying the pattern:
To flare w straight skirt at both front.and

back hem line, measure 3 cm (14") from

the hip line blending in to side curve as

shown. Next, line up the bodice front

with the skirt front at waist and do the

same with the back pieces.

Measure finished dress length trom

the highest point of the shoulder down
to the desired length.

Now mark middle of
the shoulder piece §
and draw a straight line
down to get to point
$2. Point $2 is half of

Next, connect $2 to B and S2
to A either free-hand using a
broken line as shown or with a
French curve. } always prefer the.
free-hand method for maximum
flexibility for my curve lines.

Next, cut two straps — the

length of straps is the total measure-
ment of the frent and back from point
S to $2 plus the seam. The width of the
straps is 4.cm (14"). The seain
allowance is included in this measure-
ment.

Firishing the garment:

Ivis a good idea to first cut your pattern
on muslin to ensure the proper fit before
cutting the tabric. If gaping occurs at
neck line or armholes, remove excess
fabric.

Fold out fullness from gaping arca
and raper excess to nothing. Trace the
titted muslin onto another piece of
paper before sewing bust darts, then
press. [f vou prefer a loser fit, do net
sew fitted darts at the waist. Next, sew

side seams feaving opening

sew the zipper. You have
an option to finish the

by facing or using bias
binding for decorative
finish. Lastly, sew
straps in place and
hem the dress.
