recently launched B.C.’s new
SCRAP-IT program in con-
junction with the automobile
and petroleum industries.
‘. The program — the first of
its type-in Canada — is
designed ‘to offer rebates to
pre-1983 qualifying vehicles
so that they are removed from
the. road and scrapped. An
owner whose vehicle quali-
fies couid receive. either an
incentive of up to $750

"towards the purchase of a
newer, lower polluting vehi-
cle, or a B.C. Transit pass for
one year,

The program's first year
will involve up to 1,100 vehi-
cles — 1,000 in the Lower
Mainland and
Greater Victoria area. This
initiative is expected to oper-

ate for five years and will
result in a reduction of more
‘than 10,000 tonnes of harm-
ful pollutants.

automobile dealers, with sup-
port from B.C. Hydro, B.C.
Transit, and «the Vancouver

(NSHB) Chairman Diana
Hutchinson js the keynote
speaker at the 22nd annual
general mecting of the North
Shore Women’s Centre being
held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the
centre (located at 3093 Lons-
dale Ave., North Vancouver).

The title of her talk is
“Changes in Health Care: The
Reality for Women."

Hutchinson, a West Van
district councillor for 13 years,
will be addressing two factors
within regionalization that
affect women.

First, women have lower
health status than the general
population. and have been
identified as a group that is
under served by the health-
care system and not involved
enough in decision making.

Second, when health fund-
ing and programs are curtailed
the government encourages
the community to assume
responsibility for health care.

Hutchinson is a long-time
West Van resident who began
her career as a legal assistant
and very quickly focussed on
community involvement. She
went into local politics in the
‘80s and has been active in
civic government since.
