High school ‘fun-raiser’ honors Ted Pelly BY LAYNE CHRISTENSEN Community Reporter ‘SENTINEL Secondary has organized a tribute to Ted Pelly that the popu- lar teacher would have _ surely enjoyed. Pelly died unexpectedly last July from a viral infec- tion. He was 48. His former students, col- leagues and friends have planned a dinner and dance for Saturday, May 25. The _event is to take place at the school, 1250 Chartwell Dr., West Vancouver. Event organizers are ‘billing it-as a “fun-raiser,” - with ptenty of food and non- stop dancing. music, just as Pelly would have wanted it, said Sentinel teacher Rika Luttin. Central to the event will be a buffet with Baron of Beef, ham, caesar and potato salads and assorted deserts. “Ted loved food. He was known for always eating,” said Luttin of her friend. “He was wonderful to have around because there were never any leftovers.” Pelly had a tremendous. appetite for life in general, she added. “He was one of these genuine people who made you feel good about yourself.” Pelly spent his entire teaching career, 22 years, at Sentinel, where he taught business education and physical education. He was also an accomplished athlete who dedicated many hours coaching the school’s foot- ball, basketball, swimming, track and tennis teams. Pelly also coached the Mt. Seymour Royals soccer team. The May 25 celebration is an all-ages affair that everyone is welcome to attend, said Luttin. Live music will be pro- vided by the Sentinel Rhythm and Blues Band and Fire in the Belly, a band TED Pelly... His spirit will be remembered with a dinner and dance May 25. made up of West Van busi- nessmen who perform rock ‘n' roll classics and original tunes. A group of Sentinel teachers have formed a third band, as-yet-unnamed, that is also expected to perform. Vancouver 986- 4263 will benefit the Ted Pelly Scholarship Fund. The school hopes to generate enough funds to be able to award two scholarships annually, one to a mate stu- dent and one to a female. The award would be . based on athletic and acade- mic performance as well as community involvement. Ideally, the.award recipient would be positive minded and “all-rounded, much like Ted,” said Luttin.
